We have a gas fire in our living room which was here when we bought our house last year.
On having the chimney swept we were told it wasn't installed right. The "cast iron" bit is loose & we were advised to have it bricked behind the Victorian-style tiles, a lintel installed & the gap between cast iron & wood surround sealed up.
Had a Corgi guy look at it - he said it was safe as the smoke is being pulled up the chimney & we have ventilation installed. We also have a carbon monoxide alarm to be on safe side. He advised against a lintel & bricks: it's on a solid wall & well supported. He thought just a sealant between the cast iron & wood to close the gap, would be sufficient.
What should we use? Is there anything heat resistant?
