Does a main family bathroom have to have a bath?

We're renovating a property. It's rather quirky.
The main bathroom is a slightly odd shape with several windows. Our original plan was to have a bath, separate shower, loo & double sinks but on plan it looks very squashed.

The room will primarily be used by DC (teens) who never bathe, only shower. I'm wondering now whether to just put in a big walk in shower, loo and basins. I'd prefer not to have a shower over the bath as my DP are not very mobile and will hopefully stay with us regularly.

There is another bathroom, albeit much smaller along the corridor, that could just have a bath, loo and basin. This wouldn't be done for some time due to funds.

We're doing this house to live in, not to sell. But would it be odd to have a main bathroom without a bath?

We clean teeth and wash hands/faces at the same time...

Our main/only bathroom is probably less than 2m square (the door opens outwards,or it wouldn't work).

It's a bit of a squeeze to bath two children at once, but it wouldn't be if that extra 60cm was used well.

I just left the door open and accepted DDs would get dry in the hall.

And when they are a bit older, and want a bit of privacy when they spend an hour squeezing their pimples, doing their hair and face, while someone hammers on the door?

Why not put a shower over the bath as well in the other bathroom? We had a flat like that. One with a shower cubile and the other with shower other bath. Good for guests as well.

thegreat, that would be a good solution but there's a sloping ceiling in the 2nd bathroom where the bath would best go( under the window with lovely views) Will definitely have a hand held shower though.

I've been looking obsessing over walk in showers. The ones I like are really more like a wet room. Tanking isn't a possibility so I would like to find a 1700 walk in shower with no side panel and a very low profile tray. DH assures me that at that size we won't get water all over the floor.
Does that sound practical?

Sounds lovely! When we had the estate agent round pre extension we asked about baths, having planned a large walk in shower in our extension, and got told we needed a second bath in the house. I kind of wanted one anyway, so we put a slipper bath with shower head in our ensuite, and if I ever ever ever get the rail up on the ceiling, we'll have showers standing in the bath. It would be a much easier just to have a shower though. Would have been a lovely big shower. So much easier. Stupid bath. Could have had a nice thermostatic mixer. And tiles. Pah. We've had baths only since the shower came out. It's a PITA.

That's interesting mummy, so the EA thought you should have 2 baths?
I haven't really thought about the en suite, I presumed just a shower really.

Slipper baths are very pretty though. If I was looking round a house and it had one it would really tempt me.

"as siblings rarely use the bathroom together the way a couple do."

Do most couples really perform their ablutions together? OH and I both like bathroom time to ourselves - separately.

If you have two bathrooms you don't need a double sink. Storage would be a better option.

And for what it's worth, although I shower more than bath, I still wouldn't buy a house without a bath.

Nocomet · 15/03/2014 10:10

Honestly, I don't understand this mania for having loads of bathrooms to clean.

But then I don't get showering every day regardless of whether you are dirty or not.

I have two teen DDs and our postage size single bathroom doesn't cause any problems. Hair and mameup just gets done in their rooms.

Minor debates occur in an evening as to who showers first. No debates in a morning because only DD2 ever gets up that early.

Floralnomad · 15/03/2014 10:15

I think as long as there is a bath in the house somewhere that is what matters . I wouldn't buy a house without a bath . Double sinks are a nice luxury where you have a huge amount of room and a waste of space where you don't .

whereisshe · 15/03/2014 10:52

I'd buy a house without a bath, but then I'm not British and I know baths are a requirement for houses here.

allmycats · 15/03/2014 10:57

You will have a bath in another room, on the same floor. I would go with the shower that you want in the main bathroom. I have a large shower in the main bathroom and no bath and in the secondary bathroom (not ensuite) I have a bath. Enough choice for anyone imo.

iseenodust · 15/03/2014 11:01

We have large shower in what the estate agent calls the 'family shower room' (we're selling) and have a bath in the ensuite. He thought that was fine in a 4 bed house.

truelymadlysleepy · 15/03/2014 11:02

all I agree, that's what I've decided. Off to look at overpriced showrooms to get ideas.
Thanks all.

I think a bath in the smaller bathroom is ok, as long as you have a high spec shower room in the big bathroom. I like the double sink idea in the high spec main bathroom/shower room.
