It doesn't work like that. The consumer unit manages the entire electrical installation in your home. The electrician has to test and certify that whatever he has connected is satisfactory. He has to reconnect every circuit, plus your meter tails and your main earth and your bonds. So he has to test everything, and rectify if faulty, or not do the job.

I will guess that you are thinking of a change because your installation is old and unsatisfactory.

If you want to find out the extent and cost of rectification you will have to pay someone to test and inspect your installation in advance.

We just paid £220 for a new fuse box, he had done a full test previously which was £140. so £350 - £400 sounds right.

It is a LOT of work and they have to get it right!
