Asbestos concrete water tank, anyone had to deal with one?

The survey came back on the house we're buying and there we're no great shocks except that the water tank in the loft is made from asbestos concrete. I know that it's pretty common for house of this age to have them (60's built) but how do we go about getting it out?!

We had already mentally budgeted to replace the boiler with a combi in the next 12-18 months so the tank wouldn't be needed then, but it won't fit out the loft hatch and, I assume being asbestos concrete can only be removed by specialists. Just wondering if anyone had one disconnected and what did you do with it?

We had our disconnected 4 ys ago when we had a combi boiler put in and the hot water tank taken out - 60s house too. We did look at taking it out but tbh we didn't need the space in the loft so it's still up there just empty and disconnected.

There are specialist companies who will come and dismantle it and take it away. We got a discount on the house when we bought it to account for the fact the boiler was over 30 yrs old and the tank was in the loft - came up on our survey too.

Breaking up anything asbestos is definitely a job for experts, and will need a lot of planning - they have to seal up whole areas and clean very thoroughly.

Unless you really need the space, I'd agree it's easier just to disconnect the pipes and leave it there.

We've got one. The advice was to leave well alone rather than remove.

Great, thanks for the info all. For now I think we'll just disconnect it when we get the new boiler fitted and leave alone. I'm pretty sure there is still room for the obligatory Christmas tree in the attic with the tank in situ!
