Children's bedroom trends

I have been asked to write a piece about trends in Children's bedroom design but I'm at a bit of a loss. The reason that I was asked is because I make something for Children's bedrooms (not saying what because I don't want you to think I'm trying to advertise - which I'm not)

I don't want to decline as it was nice to be asked. Any ideas? What's the fashion? Disney? Superheroes? Oak? White minimalist?... or is it a mute question because 'twill always be pink/blue?!!!

Any response would be so gratefully received. Thank you all.

Reece.

My DD has had a double bed since she was eighteen months - it was the spare bedroom before it was hers and does double duty sometimes, so we left it in there. It has been useful from time to time - DS has been sleeping in with her for three months while we have building work done. When she's been poorly, one of us has been able to kip in with her nice and comfortably.

DD's room is Scandi and brights. White floorboards, two white walls, bright block coloured wall paper with a white silhouette pattern on two walls, red solid coloured rug, lots of pink and red. It's quite Ikea...

DS is having mid century Scandi - one or two walls of carnival by graham and brown, the rest will be white, dark wood furniture (mostly vintage/granny's), big area rug, some nice framed TfL posters.

My daughters room is a full on Dora The Explorer- fest. Wall to ceiling Dora wallpaper mural on one wall and the rest is rainforest themed to tie in with the mural.

I know that the current trend is for pared back 'chic' looks but I don't know if any child would actually choose that for themselves.

In any case, the furniture is neutral so it's just a wallpaper/soft furnishings change once she is out of her Dora stage.

It's a fun looking room.Grin

Actually OP I've been thinking about this a bit more and could probably help you out a bit more

I've actually got 15 years experience of DIY retail so I've seen real people, picking things for their homes rather than using designers

If you want to private message me when I get to a computer I'll be able to give you some help, if its no use then don't worry Smile

We just decorated DDs room. She is 12. She went with her dad to look around, choose colours etc. and it is a very grown up bedroom. She has a double bed, white furniture, a red feature wall, lots of wall art and cushions with love and flowers and stuff. Looks like something from the Next Directory or like a bedroom in an American teen movie that no-one has in real life. :)

DD2 seems more Cath Kidston inspired vintage, shabby chic, patchwork, wall art and logos, bunting. that kind of stuff.

Both very different, but very now.

The trend for grey paint seems to have moved into children's rooms too. In magazines, pinterest etc there's a lot of grey walls with maybe a couple of bright bits of furniture, with scandi prints on the walls.

Going against the grain here...

DS' rooms have white furniture, but the walls are very colourful. His bedroom is Scooy Doo themed with bright yellow, orange and green walls and Scooby stickers all around.

His playroom has one sky blue wall with cloud stickers and a huge rainbow sticker and the other walls are light green. Everything decorated with dinosaur stuff.

As I said, furniture white, but the rest is co-ordinated, bright madness.

I meant worrying because if you live in a small house and your own bedroom hardly has room for a double bed, then your children's rooms won't either! but if you have the room, lovely. Really. It looks lovely.

My son is 4 and his room has cream walls and plain wood furniture. We got some curtains last year from Dunelm with animals and trees on and DH then painted big stylised trees and grass round the walls. He has a gruffalo height chart and some left over caterpillar/butterfly wall stickers too from the previous Very Hungry Caterpillar theme.

It's a bit random but mostly nature based cos he's very into animals and I couldn't find anything jungle themed which is what he really wanted but just isn't really 'in' at the moment for kids.
