What is it REALLY like to live in a Victorian house?

One day, in the far off distant future, we will be moving (once the children have left home and settled).

I was wandering around Rightmove yesterday, as usual, and realised that I seem to like the style of Victorian property more than any other era. This was a surprise to me, I always thought I'm a 1930's-semi kind of person Grin

We have a 1950's house at the moment, double glazed, centrally heated, wood burner etc - all cosy and easy to run.

So - my question is - what is it really like to live in a Victorian property?

I currently live on the third floor of a Victorian house and Victorian would not be my first choice. Why? Because it is so noisy!!! I can hear neighbours talking both above and below and when the person above is walking around it's like a herd of elephants. I hate it! Much prefer purpose built as the sound proofing is better.

I grew up in a 1700s cottage and then lived mainly Victorian houses.
The last house I lived in, which was also the first one I owned was 1890.
Slugs, cold, small terrace, huge cracks in the wall, a bit of damp and a very bouncy floor! On the plus side it did have a cellar.

We moved to a 1940s bay fronted semi and I have not regretted it for a second. Solid, warm, good room size unlike modern houses, no damp, no slugs.

1872 8 bedrooms mid terrace here, many original features
More expensive than a family of truculent teenagers grunting "wallet" at you but I love my beautiful house

Draughty. Slightly damp.
Beautiful. Full of character. Snug.
Is beyond compare at Christmas. Love my home.

Edwardian terrace here.
Seconding another poster re the slugs...and mice

I watched the slugs in one house. They would come in through the wooden back door, go through the kitchen and then leave under the skirting board.

My current house, 1946, is the newest I've ever lived in, no slugs. Do new houses not get slugs?

No slugs in my house - plenty in the back garden, but the door to the back garden is in a modern extension with tightly sealed door.
