Amtico/Karndean over quarry tiles? and other flooring queries ...

I'm in dire need of kitchen flooring help.

We are currently having a two room extension built and installing a kitchen after living without one for three years. Clearly we are very excited but going round in circles over what to put on the floor.

Kitchen will be in the original part of the house, which currently has original quarry tiles on the floor (house is 50s/60s red brick). These may sound lovely but (1) they look shit no matter how clean they are (which isn't very clean, I have two small DC Blush) and (2) suspect they're laid on bare earth, as they suck the heat from your body in winter if you walk on them barefoot. Can't wait to get rid of them but would (perversely) rather just cover them rather than ripping them up/doing something that would render them permanently lost.

Having perused c. 1 million kitchen flooring threads on here, am tempted by the idea of Amtico/Karndean (or Polyflor actually) but not clear on whether we could just put it over the tiles (over a layer of plywood?) or would have to put something on them first. Floor is flat if not entirely level. Otherwise think we will probably go for bamboo or (whisper it) laminate.

Secondly - tile or wood effect? Kitchen has a utility room attached to it which has decent vinyl flooring in fake black tile pattern. Would quite like black/dark grey tiles in kitchen too but think having two similar but different floors next to each other might look odd. Could take up utility room vinyl but reluctant as is fairly new, wasn't cheap and goes under units in there so would be PITA.

Alternatively fancy wood, which would then go into new extension, which will be a dining room adjacent to kitchen and then play room adjacent to that. Ages ago we bought some tile loc wood laminate stuff from B&Q that we have yet to use, so that will probably go in the playroom, which means playroom and dining room will have different woods in them - only visible through single door, but still worried it would look rubbish. However budget is tight so can't really bin laminate we already have.

Has anyone got to the end and have any suggestions for me, please? Kitchen is Ikea pale grey with wood worktops if that makes a difference. Thank you!

You can't put amtico/karnden over tiles, at the very least you would need to skim them with a self levelling screed, best bet would be to lift them and find out what's under them then go from there. Amtico/karndeqn is glued down and I'm not sure glue would work correctly on top of tiles.

That was a very short quick answer to my very long question, thank you Grin

We had ceramic tile down before we installed Amtico. The tiles had to come up and a self levelling compound was put down before the Amtico went down. It was dark grey slate. It looked fabulous. Easy to care for too.

Yikes, that sounds like way too much effort. Laminate it is (sorry, Mumsnet Wink)

You screed over the tiles, we are doing this too. Your karndean fitter will do it for you, they should be very experienced at it - just go for a recommendation when you find someone. The preparation is what makes it look good.

You can screed over it, but you would need to prime it before hand then it will be ok. Otherwise its a bad idea. We just had the same problem. My husband and son decided they were going to diy it......OMG. Don't even go there. We have used these guys (Battersea - London area) www.londonflooringfitters.com so far so good. Has anyone any experience on the cleaning kits? Are they glossy? Can normal people do it or do you have to get professionals in?

We are having amtico over crappy slate tiles, apparently a nightmare to rip up so screeding over before fitting. I was a bit hmmmm about this but have been told the same by two authorised fitters and the kitchen fitter. I looked at karndean too but found amtico in the exact colour I wanted.

MusicalSlippers · 02/04/2015 21:34

Hi twiggy

Just make sure they prime it before they self leveller it, if you don't it doesn't stick to the tiles when it sets and breaks off in chunks. His happened to me. My tiled floor looks completely like it did before my hub screened it. Gone for Karndean couldn't afford Amtico. Wish I could it looks a lot better. Polyflor was nice but cause it was fitted crap by the other half it out me off. Who are you using? It's looking good I must say. I'll try and up load pics. Good luck and fingers crossed it goes well for you

Thanks Musical, they said that they prime first. We were going for Karndean but in the end Amtico (the Spacia range) was a bit cheaper. I'm hoping it looks good, I am so fed up with what we have now!
