Is there (or has there been) flooding in Derby?

I especially mean the Strutts park conservation area at the lower end of Darley park, there are streets right next to the river Derwent. I'm worried but otoh for all the flooding everywhere, no one mentioned Derbyshire on the news (and I'm far away so can't just look).
Has there been in the past?
Possibly it's hilly straight away next to river?

Car boot on the cattle market in Derby (near the Pentagon) every Sunday outside winter months tho it can be a bit skanky; another one in Tansley (Matlock way) which is quite good also every Sunday Feb-Oct; also Risley hospice has a regular one which is good.

hi ladyMary is that you in disguise?

beaglesaresweet · 22/02/2014 23:25

Just to clarify on a few point, I have lived in castle donington a fair few years (37) and the only part of sawley to flood is the b6540 outside of the plank and leggit pub chain. It last flooded in 1936 and then in the 40s so they built flood defences and its never flooded since. Long eaton has never flooded in my time but think it did in the 1900s. Ive recently bought a victorian semi in sawley and its amazing for parking, pubs, train station a 5 min walk, and sky link buses to notts and east midlands airport every 20 mins! Beautiful countryside walks to shardlow and draycott. Donington just down the road are getting a sainsburys. Just taken out the 2 gas fires and installing a wood burner in the dining room and an occasional open fire in the lounge. The kichen fire breast i am going to open up and convert into a pizza over, so you get to heat the kitchen and make yummy home made pizzas.

Ps re otter street, i have a friend that lives there and she has a wonderful terraced house with original minton tiles (salivates) gorgeous road and area but and its something that really does bother her is the parking issue. Its very very tight around there and after a long day she finds it difficult finding somewhere to park close to her house. For me i think this would get very old extremely quickly. Each to their own though.

beaglesaresweet · 02/03/2014 12:41

interesting, graycolt, thanks!

Yes Otter st is very narrow, I'd be also worried how on earth would anyone park a removals lorry there to be unloading all day!? no one could pass.

Where you live, don't you suffer from planen noise, being so near airport?
Are the prices there better than Derby? Also you say train station - where does the line/lines go from there? Is it quick to Derby either by train or car? I am looking for nice(!) alternatives to Derby centre, so will have a look. Sounds good that there are Vict houses and country walks. Apart from pubs, are htere any cafes though - or if not, where aer the nearest ones, Donnington? and how to get there, only car? sorry, lots of q's.

Thank you! Im getting hungry thinkin about it, my cat also likes pizza. Have you decided anything re derby?

HawkeyeInChaos · 02/03/2014 13:09

Sorry, hadn't noticed your reply op.

I've not been to the Willington car boot, but have driven past and it looks busy. I think it is on every Saturday morning.

Actually, Willington would probably tick many boxes as it has pubs, countryside walks and a cafe. it also has a train station. howeverer, parrts are vulnerable to flooding. Nor am I sure how much Victorian stock there is (although there is a 500 Year old cottage for sale at the moment).

graycolt · 02/03/2014 13:31

I love car boot sales, currently after old victorian door handles and locks. Ive never been to wilington car boot ill have to give it a go. Shardlow has one sometimes on the playing field i think.

graycolt · 02/03/2014 14:00

When i lived in castle donington the planes just became background noise, you dont notice them unless its that massive antonov plane or a world war 2 spitfire or lancaster doing a display, the donington park race track can be loud but again its rare and its not in your face. Sawley / long eaton train station is literally just down the road and thats on the midland mainline so good for anywhere, plus parking is good round here. Yes a few cafes in sawley and long eaton and donington. Being in the centre of nottinghamshire/leicestershire/derbyshire border means the links to most places are A1 here.

beaglesaresweet · 02/03/2014 14:38

thanks gray - will keep an eye on rightmove, atm not much there and nothing that is my type of house, but could become more active in March.
See for me planes would never become background noise - had enough of then in west london! But if a nice house appears I will look.

Thanks for useful car boot info, Hawkeye. Worth visiting the place if not to live (as you say no Vict houses - cottages not my thing), but for walks/pubs. Still can't decide on area in Derby - smaller terrace house in Strutts park vs big house in Burton rd area vs Allestree which has been praised by all (but mainly 30s houses and not many to choose from). I think Strutts park is slightly winning and I will view another house there (a bit small but nice). As usual, can't have everything! One house already gone while I was taking just two days to decide, so at least it's an active market there and easy to sell if need be.

Vict. handles you can find in shops and salvage type places, maybe antique centres? Are there any such centres around Derby and Nott by the way?

aaarghhh I mean looks nice

beaglesaresweet · 03/03/2014 00:30

haha clary, thanks - I know! I'm on righmove all the time and it's new this w/end. Smaller that the one that's gone under offer (no extension here) but I will look at it next week, I hope! The only thing - again a very narrow street. How do you removals there?
Still not much in Allestree though! is it usually slow or does it pick up in spring?

OP posts:
beaglesaresweet · 03/03/2014 00:30

do you do removals

OP posts:
graycolt · 03/03/2014 06:27

That looks a lovely house, loving it minton tiles and quarry tiles outside. Not sure about the inset fire though. :)

beaglesaresweet · 03/03/2014 21:52

oh I love those wider villa-type houses, graycolt! Amazing what you can get in Long E - it's not in flood area either. I wonder why is that much less money. It is so light, well proportioned and charming decor, esp kitchen/conservatory, 16x12 living room - that's what I'm talking about! Sadly in Strutts park rooms are always smaller, but the houses are still charming, so we'll see!

OP posts:
graycolt · 05/03/2014 22:06

It is a lovely airy looking house hey! :)
