I'm thinking of doing this to a small sideboard, I read somewhere that a shellac based undercoat will give adhesion to normal gloss paint. Anyone know if thus is true?

Sorry, verystressedmum, I don't know.
I used Annie Sloan on lots of pieces of furniture. And didn't wax, I'm worried it'll be all sticky and horrible. I don't do distress either, everything had two coats. It's absolutely fine, and it's been some time now.
Pine was fine, didn't seep through. Mahogany apparently does. I painted different woods, including horrid orangy veneer, it came out super, and no sanding, prepping etc.

So I would say go for it, it's so satisfying and it looks amazing!

Gosh thank you and how timely a thread.

I told dh yesterday that I thought I'd give our pine sideboard a coat of paint and see what happens. For once he didn't try and talk me out of my sometimes nutty ideas. So thanks for the tips. Smile

Do you think painting would work as well for pine doors? I really want white doors in my house but cannot make up my mind what looks better, painted pine doors or white (cheapish) MDF doors?

Ooh I want to do this with our bedroom furniture, I was going to start with the chest of drawers which are fairly cheap orangy pine from argos, they aren't bare wood they have a sort of shiny varnish. Will chalk paint cover this without any sanding or undercoat?? Seems too good to be true! I hate sanding and it was this that's been putting me off.

Could anyone recommend where to buy chalk paint? Can you get it from places like b&q our do you have to order it online?

Yes, it would go over shiny varnish, it works a treat!
On the Annia Sloan webpage on the left hand side there's a list of shops that stocks it.
It is pricy, but to give you an idea, 1l was enough for two coats on a chest of drawers medium size with 5 drawers, a bookshelf and a little side table.

Thanks Dilidali, there is a shop not too far from me! Might go and have a look next weekend. I'm wondering if I need tester pots out whether to just go for it. The bedroom is a sort of apple green colour and I was thinking of either white or cream, but not sure if that's just playing it safe.

A tester pot is £5 for 100ml.
1l is £18 something.
If you paint the lot white/cream it won't clash with any bedding you might fancy at some point. It brightens up the room no end and it gives a clean airy feeling.

I use tesco bog standard brushes btw
