Range cookers - which one to choose (they all have shit reviews)

hinkyhonk · 04/02/2014 08:12

I'm in the process of planning a new kitchen and getting a new range cooker. But every time I think I've picked one I like the look of, I read the reviews and they are totally slatted. Small usable ovens even though the stated capacity is good, poor quality knobs, inaccurate oven temperature, pats breaking and the supplier failing to fix for months.

I know nothing is perfect and there wil always be something for someone to complain about but I want this cooker to last longer than 2 mins. I don't want to do all this research and then go for one despite a dodgy review only for the same problem to happen to me down the line.

So does anyone have any recommendations? Looking for a duel fuel range 100-110 wide approx £1500 ish

Sorry just noticed you only have 110cm I had the same problem.

hinkyhonk · 04/02/2014 10:50

Aha but I could get 120 in. I have 5m of units to play with and no limiting factors in arrangement as it is one long run so I could put two 60cm side by side with a hob on top. Is neff a good make?

Any idea about placement if the hob? Central over both ovens or to one side?

I never had any problems with Neff appliances.
Are they still part of the Bosch/Siemens/Neff group?

Had a range sized Belling that was brand new fitted into a house we bought and the best thing I ever did was keep up the insurance policy, the engineer was here all the time.
He wasn't a happy chap in his employment. Constantly frustrated and not allowed to carry the amount of spares on his van that he was used to having.
Consequently most repairs required two visits and there was an unacceptable time delay.
We replaced in the end with an Everhot true range cooker with a solid top and an industrial induction hob to one side.

I have a Lacanche (came with the house ) and I hate it. Impossible to clean and oven door get SCALDING hot. It is an industrial cooker and rubbish for the domestic kitchen IMO. I would swap it for a Rangemaster tomorrow, £7500 or not! Any offers? ( I like the one with the oven shelf on the side opening door, very clever)

cottoncandy · 04/02/2014 11:26

I had a rangemaster toledo in my old house which I loved. I now have a smeg which is also very good - I only really use the big oven rather than the small one which isn't fan assisted but I haven't had any problems with it. It's about 6 years old, and I've had it for nearly 3 years (was in the house when we moved in.

wonkylegs · 04/02/2014 14:32

I've got 2single neff fan ovens - they are soooooo brilliant (one has the slide & hide door which is fab)
Fab quality, can't fault them.
I didn't like the pan stands on the 6 burner neff hob that came with our house so when I redid the kitchen I went for a 5burner Bosch hob which is brilliant too.

dontcallmemam · 04/02/2014 15:30

I've got 2 single ovens (Siemens) side by side with an induction hob. It works brilliantly for me & I'll do the same on my next kitchen. You could have a fancy mantelpiece/ hood surround & make it into a feature.

aircooled · 04/02/2014 16:27

We bought a Rosieres range 14 years ago (by mistake). It took some getting used to and it's difficult to get a low simmer on the hob without a heat diffuser (maybe because we're on bottled gas). I like the fact that it has two big ovens - brilliant for big Christmas dinners but the elements do seem to pop rather too often (usually at Christmas). The design is good, not too fussy.

Eastpoint · 04/02/2014 16:36

I had a lacanche & hated it, we couldn't get the oven thermostats fixed, no one could help & in the end I sold it on eBay for £900. Swapped it for a NEFF oven & a NEFF combi oven & a fisher & paykel gas hob. I liked the ovens but not the hob. Now I've replaced the hob with a Siemens induction hob & a Siemens gas wok ring.

heartichoke · 04/02/2014 16:39

My range cooker is a Caple, and it's brilliant. I've had it for two and a half years - it's the predecessor of this model: www.caple.co.uk/appliances/range-cookers/double-ovens/sense-cr1204/ which is around your budget level.

Great hob - one fan oven, one non-fan - heaps of settings so that the fan oven can be non-fan/top heat/bottom heat only etc - a spit in the smaller oven (never used it, but could if I wanted to!) - both ovens have grills too - reliable and looks good.

You don't hear much about Caple ovens - they're made by an Italian maker, I think, but they're good for the price.

Spockster - "..... and I hate it. Impossible to clean and oven door get SCALDING hot. It is an industrial cooker and rubbish for the domestic kitchen IMO."

Noooooooo!!!!!

That's the point of it. Its got to be hot and industrial. I did a little time in a professional kitchen and my job in the morning was to crawl inside the massive ovens to light them and then crawl out and climb across the tops to pull the huge stove lids off with an iron hook to light the massive single gas burners underneath with a burning taper and put them all back to together before they got too hot. It was like cooking on a steam engine. Loved it. Grin

If I didnt have a new Rangemaster I'd have your Lacanche off you in a jiffy but as I suspected and confirmed by Eastpoint they are pretty much worthless when removed from a house - just like an AGA worth only scrap.

I sold my small blue natural gas AGA for £100 badly scratched and needed a total refurb. Just made the small kitchen boiling hot. That is why I got an induction hob - no heat except in the pan.

I think the people who are most sensible here are the ones with 'normal' high quality German double ovens and hob tops embedded in their work surface.

SimLondon · 04/02/2014 20:09

Dont go for a Rayburn. Nope :-(

grendel · 04/02/2014 22:37

We used to have a Lacanche. We'd lusted after one for ages and eventually came into some money and bought a beautiful blue one. It looked soooo lovely in our newly refurbished kitchen...
But the thrill rapidly wore off. I've never known such a prima donna appliance - at the slightest provocation it would decide to turn off the gas supply to the burners and you'd have to fiddle around for ages trying to persuade them to relight. Over and over again. And in order to light the gas oven you'd have to practically crawl around inside the thing with a long clicker with the gas hissing away, clicking away more and more desperately until it would finally catch and ignite a ball of flame that would singe the hair off your arm.
We sold the bastard with the house when we moved. Now we have a lovely induction hob and a bog standard built in oven. Nowhere near as flashy but at least it bloody works.

Alwayscheerful · 04/02/2014 22:46

Yes Neff built in ovens are excellent. You could centralise an induction hob over your ovens unless you have a huge kitchen and lots of worktop space but buy the biggest you can afford. Someone above mentioned Siemens, I have a friend with a Siemens induction hob, superb kit but it very much depends on your budget , I like a bargain, I would look around for an x- display induction hob.

Flopsygrowsup · 04/02/2014 23:02

We love our 110 range master

Alfiecat · 04/02/2014 23:08

We have a range master left by the previous house owners. Have no issues with the knobs and I like it a lot.

StopSquabbling · 04/02/2014 23:41

Another vote for Rangemaster with an induction hob.

lulupeg · 05/02/2014 06:02

We have Rangemaster Toledo 90 induction. It's fantastic so far (had it since November). I bloody love induction it's just brilliant, efficient and sensitive! And so easy to clean. Induction all the way for me from now on and the ovens are brilliant too, made very light work of our goose Christmas dinner and all the trimmings!

Brugmansia · 05/02/2014 19:42

I've been planning for ages on getting a range when we finally get around to doing or new kitchen. I'm now doubting this slightly and considering 2 built under ovens with a big gas hob. One thing I was wondering is whether it Is possible to get the same type of features on large hobs as you can with some ranges, eg.Hot plates and griddles that fit on. Does anyone know?

Chewbecca · 05/02/2014 19:46

I have had my rangemaster 110 since 2007 with no problems at all - very happy with it. Gas hob, electric ovens & grill.

OnePlanOnHouzz · 06/02/2014 16:58

pair of pyro clean ovens side by side and a large induction hob centralised over the top would be the best solution IME !! easy clean all the way ! and fab cooking results !

AliceInSandwichLand · 06/02/2014 17:27

Another Rangemaster vote - had one in old house, it worked wonderfully for 5 years till we moved, missed it dreadfully, redid kitchen in new house last summer with 110 cm classic with induction hob and love this one too. It was defective when installed and it took some time for the correct part to arrive with fairly iffy customer service up to that point, but when I complained about all that they gave me a generous voucher for Rangemaster cookware, which has all been excellent quality. Since it was repaired it has been excellent, and if I had my time again I'd get one again in spite of the initial problem.

daffyd · 06/02/2014 18:21

We have a Britannia 110cm dual fuel, absolutely fab,had for 9 years and recently when fan went Britannia engineer came out quickly!live it,great capacity lots of job room, highly recommended.

ceres · 06/02/2014 18:56

daffyd - our britannia is 6 years old and is shite. some of the functions broken on the main oven, ovens don't heat evenly, ignition gone on some of the burners. I have considered selling the house to get rid of it!

Rooners · 11/02/2014 20:17
