To hem curtains or move the curtain pole and supporting batten?

(New house)

Ready made curtains would be floor length plus about 5cm. Would you get the curtains hemmed (estimate please? approx 2m wide.) Or would you move the curtain pole and supporting batten 5cm higher on the wall?

It would be eyelet curtains, if that's relevant.

Hem them, definitely.
And I'm no great seamstress but I'd do them myself.
Tape them, literally with Sellotape to the correct length, iron them then sew them up by hand with running stitch.

Get them hemmed- much easier. No idea of cost but the local lady who does dress alterations will hem a pair of trousers for £6-£10
You could end up with lumps of plaster coming off when you move the baton and pole.

I would let them brush the floor. Or hem them. Use wondaweb if you can't see.

Sew. Stupid iPad.

Lord above hem the curtains. Unless you have a pet handy person who will move the pole for you to the extent of filling and painting all the holes left in the walls

DramaAlpaca · 02/02/2014 23:53

Hem them. If you move the pole your walls will be left looking a bit messy. It shouldn't cost too much at all to get them done, but it would be very easy to do them yourself as Helpyourself says above.

But hang them first- you might find that it doesn't show- they should lightly brush the floor anyway and 5cm is tiny.

Morgause · 03/02/2014 06:34

They will probably shrink after the first wash so I'd let them brush the floor until then, then hem them if necessary.

Thanks!

The room will be redecorated anyway, and the batten is probably a bit lower than usual, so it didn't seem that silly. Grin Is anyone else unusually nervous and indecisive about these things when house buying? Smile

Wow... All the houses I've ever bought have had MUCH bigger things to worry about than the height of curtain rails! Hang the curtains and then make a decision. It's possible that the rail is too low, but it's a bit like hanging a picture in that you have to try it before you know whether it's wrong.

If you find a kind friend to take them up for you (and bear in mind that curtains with fixed linings and mitred corners are a bit of pain to do), give them anice present as a thank you... I got a bottle of Hendricks for the last lot I did! Grin
