Earlsdon area of/near Coventry

just a quick info, pretty much 'yes or no' needed, so does anyone know the area? some really nice houses there near Hearsall Common. Is it better there than Coventry in general, specifically what about crime rates, and is the common a safe place, i.e. no drunks at night there etc. What about shopping facilities - can you avoid (and would you want to) going to Coventry centre? thanks!

You don't only need to consider the ten years or so of building works for the h2h but also the lack of trains from cov, leam and Warwick afterwards and the point you will need to go to Birmingham to get a train service

Earlsdon is a student type place with leamington , Warwick and Kenilworth isn't

eyebrowsfurrowed · 03/02/2014 09:18

Earlsdon is not a student place. Chapelfields is. Earlsdon's great! A private school, catholic school and an 'outstanding' state school all within walking distance. It's great for the memorial park which is good for people of all ages and lovely in the summer. And a short distance to the train station, as you know. Central 6 (through Spencer Park) has a big Boots, Mothercare and TK Maxx...

eyebrowsfurrowed · 03/02/2014 09:22

ahh just noticed you said Hearsall Common. This is more veering to Chapelfields. Earlsdon avenue North is nice and the roads leading off but from Broomfield Avenue onwards is very studentsville.

Blueuggboots · 03/02/2014 11:16

Yes. You do need to watch out for the students!! There are LOTS of student lets in earlsdon.

I don't like Rugby as much as Coventry - I lived there for a few years and felt really far away from everything. I'd definitely rather live in Coventry or Kenilworth.

MairzyDoats · 03/02/2014 18:45

Isn't Rugby prettier though? I thought Coventry was a bit...soulless? What with being bombed to the ground.

beaglesaresweet · 03/02/2014 20:48

ivykaty, are you sure that HS2 will wipe out the existing line? I thought the old line would still be there as it's cheaper and covers the stops that hs2 doesn't cover. But if wat you say is right - that's a nightmare, as all these people who used old statoins would be driving to Birm, I think old line would still connect to Birm and to london so there will be options. I tried to look up routes, but the drawings aer ridiculous - tiny detail and couldn't see where the line is (Ithink throuh Kenilworth).
Thanks all the coventry dwellers for replies!

eyebrows, I mean south of Hearsall common - that's very close to Earlsdon high st! the houses I saw don't look like rentals at all - maybe students are in less nice ones, or further out over the common.
Mairzy, I've read a lot of negative posts about Rugby on MN! mainly that it's not nice-looking.

The poster who suggested Warwick and Lem Spa - sorry can't see prev page while typing - I'd go for Warwick (or Stratford) if budget could stretch! but obviously Coventry much cheaper. Lem is also a bit more expensive and I've been there but somehow didn't like it.
Btw, Lemington is VERY studenty, saw lots of them in town centre and in supermarkets, and lots of same info on MN too, though I'm sure there are non-studenty residential areas.

Hs2 will not wipe out existing line but it will make those lines pretty much redundant otherwise who would travel to Birmingham to get to London in less time but take more time than it does now?

Warwick now had two stations so trains don't stop as often at town station you need to get to out of town station where you can pay to park and then travel, which of course cost more in time and money

beaglesaresweet · 04/02/2014 00:40

ivy, but I think hs2 will be very expensive so many people would still choose the old line. Plus Coventry isn't Birmingham. It's only an hour to hour and fifteen min now from London, shorter route has only one stop at MK. So HS2 (if it wouldn't stop at Coventry) would still work out not quicker (but more expensive) than existing train as you'd have to go via Kenilworth (I assume) or Birm and then drive. I'm not planning to live in B.

Hey can't choose to be on a train that no longer runs

I would choose to use some trains from my local station but they no longer stop as ,they now stop at the out of town station

ivykaty44 · 04/02/2014 07:27

They have, Already said they will reduce services when h2 ,Comes along regardless of , ,The fact h2 _,will not have any stops between London and birmingham

eyebrowsfurrowed · 04/02/2014 09:02

Impact of HS2
The capacity that would be freed up by
Phase 1 of HS2 between London and
Birmingham could allow for a significant
improvement in services for Coventry:
• An improved timetable at local stations on
the Birmingham to Coventry route
• A far greater chance of a seat for
commuters from Coventry to Birmingham
or London, as most longer distance
passengers would not be taking up space
on these trains
• More locations which can be reached from
Coventry without a change at Birmingham
New Street, for example Derby and
Sheffield
• Potential half-hourly Leamington Spa-
Kenilworth (new station)-Coventry-
Birmingham New Street service
• Capacity for further freight growth, leading
to a reduction in road congestion

(Network Rail report)

ivykaty44 · 04/02/2014 11:17

Kenilworth station had been going to be reopened for around twenty plus years, sorry but I just don't believe that the service of Coventry and leamington will stay the same for passenger trains but freight will increase I have no doubt

eyebrowsfurrowed · 04/02/2014 11:20

By my own admission I don't know enough about HS2, sorry. I just wanted to defend Coventry!

beaglesaresweet · 05/02/2014 19:04

well, that's worry ivykaty, but then eyebrows is giving a contradictory info. Eyebrows, so is this official (if so,m i'm surprised you are saying you don't know enough) - obv that would be great news, especially for me if there will be direct trains to Derby.
How the heck to know for sure though? It's a big decision. If the station WILL after all close there, I definitely wouldn't buy now.

'a worry'

I definitely don't think Coventry station will close, the issue is with the links to Birmingham for HS2 to London. If this network rail proposal happens it will make them more seemless I think? But From reading Katy's comments it seems she's been following it closely and has her heart in it. Whereas I just found that report in a quick google search of 'Coventry station HS2.'

ivykaty44 · 06/02/2014 15:49

I don't think stations will close and certainly not Coventry, but I do think London trains will be reduced and instead of one an hour or two an hour they will run less frequently and possibly one each two hours this may cause problems for commuters
