did anyone else have stenciling and a welsh dresser?

Just an idle question really. I was thinking of what fashions in decorating have come and gone in the last 30 years. When we were first married we bought a welsh dresser. I don't know why, it's just that everybody did. I also did stenciled borders all round my rooms. More recently, I was very excited to get an Ercol daybed cheaply, and had to sell it again, as it was so bloody uncomfortable. It always makes me smile when I see them in style magazines.

yup , stencilled the buggery out of the hallway , with a paint effect done with a feather duster on the wall below the dado. Was so pleased with myself.
had a stencilled lemon tree on one wall Hmm
I still love welsh dressers though

My dd's room still has stencilling which must have been done 20 years or so ago....
It's just so lovely - moon with a smiley face and stars - that we've avoided painting her room just because we don't want to lose it. When we move house she wants some more in her new room.

My parents have a pine Welsh dresser which was in the house they bought in 1978ish. It was painted, they STRIPPED it. They have wished they hadn't for a while (but not cared enough to paint it back) but I remember how excited they were when it went back in place all lovely and orange Smile

There's a lovely family-run pizzeria in York in a medieval hall which has stencilled lemon trees on the wall and I kind of like it - given that the medieval walls would have been painted it fits. Plus when you're eating your pizza somewhere that's 500 years old it seems a bit harsh to object to something being 20 years out of date!

I'd forgotten paint effects! I went to a workshop on them - sponging, rag rolling, crackle glazing.

We had a welsh dresser when we got married in late 90s.

I thought it was gorgeous at the time, but would be so dated now.

We also had a Laura Ashley stencilled border in our kitchen. We had no taste.

Ivy stencil trailing through the conservatory… welsh dresser in the dining room

greyvix · 01/02/2014 22:13

I actually went on a stencilling course; I was very proud of the results. Luckily, I never got into sponging and other paint effects on walls though.

Welsh dressers dated?
That's like saying having a chair to sit on is old fashioned.

MeAndMySpoon · 02/02/2014 08:07

Lol at the idea of a dresser being dated! Grin It's a classic piece of furniture, for heaven's sake. Not everyone changes their decor and furniture every five years to reflect current fashion.

carlajean · 02/02/2014 10:04

Well, perhaps it's my age then, but I do think it was a very 80s thing. At that time everybody seemed to have one, preferably in stripped pine. I remember getting ours from a place in Kent whose whole business was shipping in old dressers from Wales, stripping and selling them, and it was massive -rows and rows of them.
I'm not stupid enough to think that people don't have them now, it's just that, 30 years ago, they were ubiquitous.

no welsh dresser here, but I was desperate for one.

Me and dh did however, have very cool paint effect on our walls in our first house...I cant remember what it was called. it was a kind of brush stroke effect....in a gentle orange (I bought special paint and everything!!). All of our friends thought it was really cool and I gave 'lessons' to a few mates who couldn't do it as well as I had. BlushGrin

Starballbunny · 02/02/2014 10:31

Also the dresser in our dining room is probably Edwardian (or a between the wars copy), it's not well enough made to be actually Victorian, but it's certainly not 1980's

TunipTheUnconquerable · 02/02/2014 15:32

I've been googling stencils and there are some LOVELY ones now. They seem to be coming back instead of wallpaper. They're much more detailed than the 80s ones - also more expensive, eg £100 for nice ones. (Could make sense in a big room though, given how much wallpaper costs.)

FrontForward · 02/02/2014 15:41

Welsh dressers are dated if placed incongruously within surroundings. I.e. Not every house should have one

I think you've taken this a little too personally starball. We weren't referring to your quality piece Wink

MrsSteptoe · 02/02/2014 15:45

Oh gosh, yes, definitely. I had a copy of The Stencilled House by Lyn Le Grice and pored over it endlessly.
I would love stencilling to come back into fashion. I always thought it was lovely when it's beautifully (and judiciously!) done.

Trills · 02/02/2014 16:05

I've had to google welsh dresser.

I have a thingy that has drawers underneath and open shelves above in my current rented house - I'm going to miss it when we leave - it's where we keep glasses (nice ones on display, less nice ones in the nice deep drawers).

dontcallmemam · 02/02/2014 16:06

Blush I had the wall of the downstairs loo stencilled in a smudged creeper. I couldn't stop adding to it, it was like a triffid.
I aspired to have a Welsh dresser but never got there.
I also had a penchant for bows made out of wired ribbon everywhere, I even had the VV Rouleaux book called 'How to cover your home in shit bows.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 02/02/2014 16:09

So, you people that have done stencilling, is it difficult?

carlajean · 02/02/2014 16:24

No, not at all, but what I really want to try now is one of those paint rollers that give you patterns on the wall (as in the creative design challenge program)

TunipTheUnconquerable · 02/02/2014 16:46

Yes, I bet they take more of a knack to use but they'd be so much quicker.
I loved both the ones she did - the cow parsley and the deer.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 02/02/2014 17:54

Found them.
They're going to date like crazy but I don't care!
