Taking out warm air heating systems

I have an ex council house, which had a warm air system that was replaced with a combi boiler/gas central heating. Around the house I have vents in most rooms from the warm air, which have been plastered over as the house is getting redone, no problems there. But in my bedroom I have a rectangular pipe that runs from ceiling to floor, that I would like removing. Will it need a plumber or builder to do this, or is it OK to just be ripped out? I'm assuming there's nothing running through it, as it hasn't been used in years, and it sounds hollow when you knock on it, but a bit worried in case it's attached to something that shouldn't be touched!

There could well be asbestos in there so don't "just rip it out".
