Why do people put their house on the market if it's already sold?!

A pre warning - this is a rant.

We have had our house on the market for 2.5 months. It's a lovely house. We want a bigger house in the same area. About a month ago a lovely house came up. Great size, needed work. The price reflected this and also meant we could buy it without needing to sell ours. We offered immediately. We discovered that the house, despite being marketed, was already sold and the estate agent was just re-listing it because there had been some issue and the vendors wanted to scare their buyers by remarketing. Gutted!

So yesterday we got an offer on our house. Slightly lower than we wanted but in fairness, realistic so we accepted. We made an offer this morning on a lovely house which does require us to link our sale. Turns out, they ALSO already have buyers lined up but are just continuing to market the property. I feel like we are not even off the starting block in this process and it's already crazy. Is everyone just messing about?!

This system is so messed up! I think that further down the chain there is time pressure for the people that have offered on our house. I don't know how this is ever going to work out. Have we just had bad luck twice? Are honest vendors out there?!

I'm off to get some chocolate. I'm going to have put on 2 stone by the time this is over!

Thanks for listening!

when we were looking I found a lot was down to the EZ'a playing games.
there was not much available so houses were listed. I ring up , sorry its sold.

Twice I have found out that these houses were in fact never for sale but were friends / family of the EA. Used to pull new buyers in and registered on the books.

That is so frustrating! It shouldn't be allowed! I wish I could remain emotionally detached from it all but I find it impossible!

The first scenario sounds like a silly game. The second though, if they have buyers but are continuing to market doesn't that mean they are still open to better offers?

Yes, I think they are open to better offers. But I'm not sure they have any intention of actually moving any time soon. If we make a better offer (whatever that might be) they will still market until they finally find somewhere to move. I discovered today that it's been on the market on and off for 2.5 years and has had multiple offers in that time ... and they still have not found anywhere. I like the house but I'm not sure I want to get involved!
