Bathroom vanity unit

Hi I am looking for advice on buying a bathroom vanity unit. I have already ordered the bath and toilet. A relative has advised not to buy as he says they would not last long due to steam etc.. . Has anyone any experience of using a vanity unit. How long should it last, what make of vanity am I looking for, what price should I pay or should I just get the normal sink with pedestal. I do need the storage space as well, but I don't wish to be fixing it say a few years later.

I struggled with the vanity unit/pedestal decision myself recently and have opted for pedestal.

Reasons: it's a small bathroom and there would not be much space between it and the rest of the bathroom suite - so just difficult to get to dustraps either side.

I think they will look dated. The ubiquitous basic one with 2 doors and overhanging washbasin already does look a bit dated to me.

Same worries as you re the unit getting damaged.

There are other very slimline storage solutions that I prefer.

Anyway, if you do go ahead, the cheap ones are MDF. They are almost all 550 wide at basin heigh although some are 513/520 at floor level. They vary in depth.

Bathstore has an unusual square sink one 500cm wide in their Alpine range in their sale. All the other big chains do the cheap ones from £75 right up to a couple of £s depending on construction and where you buy it. Lots of online reviews claim they are difficult to assemble / plumb in. I have no experience to share.

You can also get vanity units that hang from the wall leaving the floor space underneath clear.

I like them. Ours is a Godmorgon one from Ikea. I don't like pedestals.

Like all things, you will get what you pay for. Cheaper vanity units will usually be from poorer grades of chipboard or mdf and wont stand up well to the humidity in the bathroom. A quality unit will have high grade moisture resistant chipboard or mdf with sealed edges.

That makes 2 of us dontcall!

Hi i can see it's been a few years but did you buy this unit and how has it been? I wonder whether the veneer has stared to lift in the steam?I am thinking of buying this.

I've had a solid oak one made by a local carpentry company for 11+ years in ensuite- quite a small damp room but it wore fine. We've had an Ikea (maybe hemnes) one in our rental property for 5 years and it gets checked on inspection each year and it's still fine.

We have a floating one from bathstore in our family bathroom that's about 18 months old and it still looks new. I couldn't do without it really, houses all kinds of sanitary products/toilet roll/cleaning products that I wouldn't want on display.

I am in Bath . Travis Perkins have an in-house bathroom department. They have some of exactly the same vanity units as Fired Earth. Unfortunately I only found this out after I had bought a FE one.
