The patio door in my Dad's living room has had it. The wood on the sliding door is buckled, and now the glass is broken. Dad has dementia and I need to arrange to have it replaced.vHe lives with my bother who has managed to shut the door to. Bro has mental health problems and just would never have the resources to manage he situation.it falls on me to get this sorted and I don t know where to start. Who do I go to? A carpenter? A double glazing company? I have no idea who put the door in originally and will probably never know as Dad won t be able t tell me.thanks for any advice.

Is it a door wooden frame, as opposed to a plastic one.

If you are after a wooden replacement a joiner should be able to help you, if it's a UPVC one then a double glazing company should be able to do it. Whoever it is should be Fensa or Ceritas registered to be exempt from notifying building regs.
I'd go to a local independent firm preferably one that someone you know can recommend.
Avoid the big national firms at all costs - they are renowned for pressure sales tactics(will try to reglaze the whole house) and gross over pricing.

Hi yes the door frame is all wood, with metal running grooves. I would like to avoid the big companies too.

Have a look to see if the Trading Standards in his area have an 'approved trades' scheme, as they are inspected/reviewed

Try this site for quotes. I've used it a few times. Its quite good. here

Does he have insurance they could organise it for you

Lagoonablue · 26/01/2014 19:40

Your local Age Uk will have an approved list of tradesmen who are demential friendly.

whataboutbob · 26/01/2014 20:10

Thanks these are some great ideas. Unfortunately his insurance lapsed, and one of the reasons was the back door not being secure.Once it is done his insurance broker has identified an insurance company who would be willing to insure him.
Contacting Age UK and also the local council for approved tradesmen is a really good idea. Still I'm not quite sure what tradesman I'm looking for: carpenter? Builder? But maybe those organisations can help point me in the right direction.

Window fitter. Google "window fitter and you should get some choices. Any builder should also be able to do this and would have suppliers they would use to make the replacement door. And to be honest some carpenters might as well.
