Orla kiely bedding

I read an article a while back about trying to locate Orla Kiely fabric for a blind, i then went to buy a double quilt to have a blind made.

It has arrived back, made perfectly, except when its down fully it looks like it slants towards the left as the stems on the material at the 2 sides aren't straight the material has been sewn straight just the way its folded over. (difficult to explain)
I emailed the lady who made it who says its not proper fabric for a blind it percale, which stretches and the pattern is not straight.
I dont deny its not standard fabric for the blind and i am not criticising her work, but i wondered if anyone else had ever had a similar situation, as im not a dressmaker/machinist its not something i know enough about..Help, so i make a big deal or just grin and bear it...

Grin and bear I'm afraid.

That's rubbish. She should have stitched it to thick cotton in that case, and if there was a directional pattern she should have made sure it was straight. Sounds like she was in a hurry and just sewed away. I would send it back personally.

I make a lot of stuff btw, professionally for a while. I wouldn't want to make a blind with a duvet cover, but I would have stitched it onto thicker backing fabric. It's called underlining. I'm sure you would have been happy to pay another £15 or so to get a good result and she should have suggested it.

You can't "send it back" as there is nothing the lady who made it will be able to do, apart from refund you.

MIL makes blinds for a living, and would be rolling her eyes if someone asked her to make a blind from such fabric. I agree underlining should have been used, though.

So the OP, who knows nothing about fabric (no offense OP) and might have expected someone to tell her if her expensive duvet cover was going to result in a wonky blind, should just have to suck it up? I would be surprised if the pattern wasn't straight on quite an expensive duvet cover. Any chance of a picture?

How big is the blind is it possible there will be enough to make another one? You might be able to negotiate a little as she may be able to flog yours as a second and you might be able to pay a bit more for a proper underlined version.

when i asked initially about making it with a quilt before i went ahead to buy it, she said it would be ok, it is lined with thermal lining so is reasonably thick...i need to look at the pattern and decide if it is slightly askew.

I am not unhappy with the blind she make them beautifully my disappointment is that if she had quality checked it she could see if was slightly askew, or even just let me know when this material is used this is what could happen.
I didnt like to complain as she has made a few for me and i am always happy. She has made her point quite clear so i dont think i will stand any chance getting any refund, i do have enough to make another one but i really cant afford to pay another £140 ...
Thank you for your responses thats why o posted to see what people thought x

If it was a fabric with a slight stretch in it/openweave so it pulls, she should have underlined it, which is different to lining. She probably bagged the lining, which certainly would have pulled a weaker fabric out of shape. She should have let you know first - I'm sure you could have returned the duvet cover if it really was askew in the first place.

I would not be happy, especially with someone I had used before and might well have used again. Also, where is the rest of your duvet cover? Was it patterned on both sides?

neetfeet69 · 27/01/2014 16:17

i have the remainder of the duvet, and no it wasn't patterned both sides just the 1, the material is percale...i wouldn't have said it was stretchy but im not the expert, i trusted her and like you said sadly will think twice about using her again, i havent noticed the material being askew that much i suppose i just have to take it as it is...and if i win the lottery get it remade
