Would it be a really boring look......

...to decorate the house we are buying in white and maybe cream throughout? At the moment it's all peeling seventies wallpaper and desperately needs lightening and brightening but it's so long since we tried to change an entire house I'm not sure what looks good these days.

I've done a lot of houses, completely. I think white and cream can work. Do you think you're potentially overthinking it, amoungst the many things that spin in your head durring a move?

Would it be practical to go room by room?

I've become a big pinterest fan. I have lots of boards one for each room, front and back garden. I pin everything i like and find or upload images of stuff I already have that I want to fit in that space. A colour scheme can emerge from all the stuff you find yourself pining.

DameDeepRedBetty · 25/01/2014 22:04

My default position for decorating remains white or very pale cream. It's dead cheap, covers a multitude of sins, and gives you time to think about changing stuff later. What's not to like?

The house we have just bought is painted white throughout. Everyone keeps telling me how brilliant it is that we have such a blank canvas and actually I have no idea what else to do with the walls, so leaving it as it is for the time being. You can paint over the white paint once you have decided what colours you fancy, but if the wall paper is awful it will start to feel more like your home once you have painted it yourselves.

Thanks, interesting points! Yes,guess I may be over-thinking it. It looks so awful at the moment though, just trying to imagine it looking totally different!

I like white, it makes the place feel more spacious. It gives you the freedom to then use whatever colours you like. Pictures and paintings look best on white.

Do you have children? I think it can get tatty and grubby in no time and also looks a bit bland.

I think I might be swayed by the fact that we have lots of pictures and white frames, and the dc bedroom furniture is white, so everything would just blend in in nothing would stand out. Also I hate decorating, so really couldn't be bothered to paint it all once then have to do it again when decided on colours.

MargotLovedTom · 26/01/2014 08:25

Not a very literate post - have not had first cup of tea yet!

TheLeftovermonster · 26/01/2014 22:00

Yes it does go grubby with kids! So would every other colour though, unless you go for those victorian brown shades designed to hide the dirt. Anyway, it's pretty easy to give it a new coat of paint or even just touch it up here and there.
I guess it is personal preference and what the furniture will be like. Natural wood goes great with white.

Clawdy · 26/01/2014 22:20

That's true, Leftovermonster. Think I'll go for it!

The wipeable paints are fantastic.

Just a quick trip around with a baby wipe

MargotLovedTom · 26/01/2014 22:51

I'm just going off personal experience, when we moved into our house (bought it from a couple with no children) the living room/dining room was a pristine off white. Didn't stay that way for long, and it's now been painted a sandy colour which is more forgiving, and looks much warmer as well.

Anyway, happy decorating!

If I'd had the space it would've been MargotLovedTomAndJerryFanciedBarbara Wink.
