Portable Kitchen Island?

We're renovating the kitchen and the kitchen island question has reared it's head.

I'm not a great fan - although I think we need the work space. Does anyone know where I could find, maybe a stainless steel topped one, on wheels?

Ikea?

Treaclet · 25/01/2014 12:22

IKEA's aren't big enough. I'd like one about the size of an "island"

What about the ikea Stenstorp at £200? You can put castor feet on it easily and it's quite big, we love ours.

What sort of size are you looking for roughly?

Quinteszilla · 25/01/2014 13:08

I was thinking from their Free standing kitchen range They are massive?

OnePlanOnHouzz · 25/01/2014 13:41

I have a Varde large island - it's too heavy to move !! I know it has a maple worktop on it rather than the standard beech one - but even before we changed the top it was too heavy to move about ! why do you need it to move ?! have you space to move something so large about ?!?

OnePlanOnHouzz · 25/01/2014 13:43

if you want a stainless steel type on wheels - I'd look on an industrial kitchen reclamation site - there are a few about ! might be the simplest option !

Treaclet · 25/01/2014 17:06

Oh thanks all. I like both of those but especially the Stenstorp.

I don't need to move it I suppose but i like the look when they have wheels and it doesn't feel so "fitted" iykwim.

OnePlan - I've seen some nice ones on Houzz but it seems quite difficult to find out who the suppliers are of their products, but I think mostly American.

The Stenstorp is really lovely. You can't tell on the ikea pictures though that one side you can sit at like a breakfast bar and the otherside has shelves. Really strong and sturdy. We've had lots of compliments about it from friends and family.

Take a look at
www.ikeahackers.net/2010/04/kitchen-island-on-wheels.html

They have added wheels to theirs. They have also take the extra legs off the bar side.

Sorry no idea how to do clickable links on iPad.

OnePlanOnHouzz · 25/01/2014 18:11

You can usually ask a question about any of the photographs on Houzz if you have signed up ( which is free ) not everything is American - but a lot is ! You could always have a copy made more locally maybe ?!

MummytoMog · 25/01/2014 19:13

I got the stenstorp second hand on eBay and it's lovely! We're using it as a temporary kitchen at the moment but we liked it so much we've incorporated into our kitchen design.

When I did my kitchen I liked the movable stuff from Chalon
