Recommendations needed for revamp of kitchen cupboards/worksurface

Has anyone successfully revamped an existing kitchen? Ours is less than 10yrs old but not really our taste. Carcasses are fine though so don't want to replace the whole lot.

Would new doors or a revamp of existing be better/easier/cheaper?

If new doors, where can you source these as we have a number of odd shaped doors/drawers

For a revamp are there any good companies who do this?

We also need to replace some oak worksurface with granite (eg: round the sink) and need any good company recommendations.

I have googled but there are loads and I am overwhelmed!

Location - Gloucestershire, so Bristol, Birmingham, Oxford companies all possible.

Thanks in advance Smile

Are the doors in good shape? My friend had her cupboard doors resprayed at a car workshop for around £50.

Yes, they are, but they have recessed middles and a kind of country cottage 'panelling'. A different colour might work and a car workshop spray is genius Grin

We painted ours a beautiful French grey and it has transformed the kitchen. It was a lot of work tho so we got someone in to do it. Also retiled the kitchen but left work tops as they were good quality granite.

Silver did you get a specialist to do it or a local painter/decorator? I have used a local painter so i'll run it past them and see if it is something he would tackle

I think paint and new knobs will be enough....

I painted mine myself after some excellent advice on here, used zinnsser bin first then eggshell, Im really pleased with it, however I don't know how long it will last yet, as only recently done it! It take take me quite a while but I am a slow painter.

Thanks mrshap - could you link me to your thread where you got advice?

Cheers Smile

There are lots of companies that do just doors (try diy-kitchens etc). We are doing similar now - replacing the doors etc and worktops. When we moved in, we painted the (oak) kitchen and replaced the work tops (just went to our local timber store), put new floor down etc but after 3 years, I'm finally replacing the doors.

It depends what style your doors are - although our doors look much better painted, they're quite an old fashioned style - i.e. carved recesses / trim etc which still look quite old fashioned despite the F&B makeover! It was obviously cheaper than replacing the doors, but I think if I had the choice again, I'd go straight for replacing them.

We used this company for work tops after recommendation from friends. V happy with amount of choice they had. They fitted them about 3 years ago and we've had no issues at all - v happy. www.themarbleworkshop.co.uk/Contact/tabid/63/Default.aspx

Thanks Mandy - some of the outsides of the cupboards can be seen so I'm not sure how we would deal with this if just replacing the doors. Painting seems like the only option to get everything properly matching; I just need to find someone to do it and with products that last long enough. I have googled a few 'refurb' places and they seem to all have terrible reviews Confused

Thanks Wantto - I have contacted them for a quote

Look up traditional painter website they have a lot of info. I also used zinsser bin and then little Greene eggshell and the finish is great.

Cant link my thread sorry as on phone, I have not painted carcasses just the doors after much debate, I was going to do carcasses, but saw a pic on internet with just painted doors and realised how nice the contrast was. It looks good and like a new kitchen.
It was quite a lot of work though, I took the doors and knobs off, had doors drying everywhere, was ok as I wasn't living in the house at the time, I painted the front of doors first, but then realised my mistake as when I came to paint the back, I was marking the front by leaving one of them to dry on a leaflet that came through the door, stupid I know now the ink stuck to the door, re did that one!
Buy a nice brush which will fit in the recesses of the door as you will have to work quickly and a smooth roller, I discovered the roller could be used for edge of door too..

I think Transform are based in Bristol, they fit 'granite' worktops over your existing ones.

We painted our kitchen last year, peeled off the laminate, mdf primer, good quality undercoat, gloss paint then yacht varnish.

Replaced worktop, sink, taps, flooring, re-plastered and re-tiled for @£600. And it looked cocking lovely
