Cheap flooring options

Budget is maxed out for our extension and having a floor dilemma. Two new bedrooms, both need floors, have to be cheap as possible but not manky. Those big tongue and groove chipboard panels are down already, so whatever I put down will need underlay. I'm not laying carpet myself again, I'm not good at it and it doesn't look great. So carpets have to have laying cost factored in. Also, although it looked like a cheap option anyway, both rooms are 3m by 5m and carpets seem to come in 4m rolls. Sigh. Non-manky laminate? Not very cosy, but I could put big cheap rugs down I guess.

Any suggestions I haven't thought of? I've only really looked at Carpetright, but up for looking elsewhere for carpet.

When I'm recarpeting my rental properties I always try to do it as cheaply as possibly.
By far the cheapest option I have found is to ring around or visit local carpet places with the room dimensions and ask about off cuts and 'ends of rolls'.
I have even learned that a good carpet fitter can cut and fit several smaller pieces to fit a room with it being unnoticeable.
Also ask about a discount for fitting, if I am doing several rooms I always ask for a discount, sometimes I will lie and say that I have had another (better) quote for an independent fitter and ask them to match it or give me a better quote, if the won't I will tell them that I'll have to think about it then and call them back another time, this sometimes works, if not I just call back the next day and order it.

Definitely shop around though.

Just wanted to say the size (over 4m) isnt an issue. Our lounge is 5m x 4m and we had the cheapest of cheap carpets laid - think it was Carpetright. Its plain, but had texture in it, they laid 2 pieces and you honestly cant see the join. Think it was 3.99 or 4.99 per metre, underlay was about 8 or 9 per metre but if we bought it the fitting was free.

Carpet wrong want you to think they are cheap. Look for a local independent, probably one who supplies fitters working on contract for shops, offices and hotels. What he lacks in glossy showrooms and oily salesmen he will make up for in value and roll ends.

Be sure to look beyond the price label and include the underlay and smoothedge as well as fitting and waste disposal. Chains hope you will not notice their prices for the extras.
