Loft conversion and fire regs

I can see I'm going to be a regular in this section now we're at the planning stage of our loft conversion Grin

I've read a lot of the previous threads on safe fire routes and tried reading the regulations on this but it's all a bit much for me...

We have original victorian doors on our first floor. If we covert our loft do we really have to replace them? And what's all this talk about enclosed stairwells??

We spoke to building regs re. the doors as we have beautiful Georgian doors on the first floor. They said that as long as we had fully opening windows on the first floor and a fire escape window on the top floor then we didn't need to replace the doors. We have sash windows on the first floor and a fully opening velux on the attic floor.

We converted our loft into a bedroom
All bedroom doors and the door to downstairs had to be replaced with fire doors
The loft had to have either a door at the top into the room or a door at the bottom of the enclosed staircase
We had to put in mains, linked smoke detectors

Oh yes, we had mains linked smoke detectors too.

Oo thanks. So does it just depend on the local council?

We will have a mini landing in the loft with doors into the bedrooms - does this count as enclosed?

All first floor rooms have fully opening windows and the new loft rooms will too..

We have just had a loft conversion on our victorian terrace and had to replace all our original doors with fire doors. Have heard that you can purchase a product that you can varnish on doors to make them fireproof so this could be an option (our original doors weren't in great condition so we opted to replace them instead). Also, we managed to source nice period-style fire doors and bought period door handles etc so they actually look pretty good. I think councils can vary in how strict they are about these things. Saying that, with three small children we were quite happy to make sure we had everything replaced to make the house as safe as possible.

When we had ours done in 2007 we rushed to get it done before the fire regs changed because we would have had to change the doors and they're one of the best things about our house (original 1700s batten doors with original door furniture on some) - it would have been an absolute disgrace to remove them. I think it is taken seriously in our area.

Apparently fire alarms in each room will do it (or something about some new type of paint) so my doors are safe Grin yay

Thanks everyone!!!
