Carpets in a rental. How much to clean or replace?

I'm doing up our UK house to re let after our tenants move out in a couple of weeks. We accidentally emigrated to NZ so I'm doing it all via our agent which is a bit stressful!

I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of the costs of carpet cleaning, or new carpets? I've been quoted 250 GBP to clean the hall, stairs and two small bedrooms. It's a Victorian terrace and the rest of the house has wooden floorboards. This includes moving the furniture. It seems very high to me.

I was also wondering if it might be better just to replace them. Is anyone willing to tell me what you paid for new carpets?

We paid £800 for three bedrooms, but they are big rooms and we didn't choose the cheapest carpets. They did want the rooms clearing though so you would probably have to pay extra for that or get someone to come and clear them for you then put the furniture back afterwards.

got a quote for about £500 to recarpet an entire 2 bed house (bedrooms, hall, stairs, living room). It will depend where you are.

it is nice for tenants to get new carpets, but deposit-wise you get nothing back for them in 7 years or under so don't expect them to last.

£250 seems quite reasonable to me. I got quoted about £700 to have two sofas cleaned.

Thanks all. I've asked for another cleaning quote and will see how we go.

Our house has a downstairs bathroom so I suspect we'll end up with sharers and probably men. Our last ones were three guys who were there five years. They've been okay but the place does feel a bit grimy. I wonder if new carpets would be a sensible spend.
