anyone care to add their opinions on whether we should carpet our lounge?

we have terracotta tiles in lounge, kitchen and reception room- was thinking carpet in lounge would make it warmer and cozier- it's proving to be expensive though as we don't want to ruin tiles so underlay and installation are more expensive- it is worth it? would putting runners, etc down be as effective? would you prefer your lounge carpeted?

If the tiles are nice/original, then I'd just get some really nice big rugs tbh.
Is that an option?

We carpeted our large lounge to replace laminate (quite posh laminate, so not the cheap bog standard type). We find it much nicer and surprisingly lower maintenance. We found the laminate just ended up with loads of dust bunnies all over it and needed a lot of hoovering to keep on top of it. I would be slightly more reluctant to cover nice terracotta tiles however ...

huge expensive rug.

ChippingInWadesIn · 16/01/2014 10:07

I would - I like tiles in the kitchen/bathroom and could live with them in a hallway - but not in the lounge.

I'm a bit puzzled as to why you are asking though - surely it's just personal preference unless you are selling?

ChippingInWadesIn · 16/01/2014 10:08

PS: I didn't mean you shouldn't ask, just I'm confused as why you'd ask about something like that when it's personal preference - a bit like asking what you should have in your sandwich for lunch?!

tiles aren't original- they were there when we moved in though. They are just really hard underfoot- not cozy at all. But DH thinks no need to spend £££ when we have nice tiles...I just wonder if I am being silly covering them up.

chipping- of course is personal preference but I am really torn and looking to canvas general opinion to help me decide..... and as you know- someone may come up with some amazing pearls of wisdom or personal experience.....

We've gone from carpet to wood floor in our lounge, I am horrified at the number of dust bunnies running around and how dirty the floor gets (kids, animals and husband.. Grrrr) all that was hidden in the carpet, yuck!
We have a big rug that I take outside and beat regularly and Hoover it once a week, I know that there is all sorts of unmentionables in there but it is hiding less than the carpet did.
you can change a rug easier if it gets stained

Rooners · 16/01/2014 10:24

It depends on the tiles. I dislike a lot of modern tiles so would just get rid if I didn't like them.

Also depends on how long you intend to stay.

BettyandDon · 16/01/2014 10:32

If you have kids or pets I say no.

We are about to replace a 3 year old carpet as it's beyond the pale due to the aforementioned. We steam clean it every 3 months throwing good money after bad!

ofcoursethisisanamechange · 16/01/2014 10:51

yes Betty- have both! thanks for opinions everyone....

I'd carpet (or rip it up and put down wood), I don't understand why anyone who doesn't live in a hot country would have tiles outside of a bathroom or kitchen (although I wouldn't even have them in a kitchen) they must be freezing.

HaveToWearHeels · 16/01/2014 12:59

carpet, much warmer.

DoNotDisturb · 16/01/2014 13:35

We've just put a big rug in our bedroom. Pick a carpet you like and buy a rug size piece and get it whipped. Much cheaper than proper rugs and you can then get a room sized rug with your tiles peeping out the edge for effect Smile

PrimalLass · 16/01/2014 13:42

I love rugs so would spend the money on a huge, really good one instead.

snowgirl1 · 16/01/2014 17:28

If you don't particularly like the tiles why bother spending a lot on special underlay to protect it? Just put down carpet and enjoy the carpet

Dontletthemgetyoudown · 16/01/2014 17:41

I have cream limestone tiles throughout downstairs. They were here when I moved in and the property is rented but with dogs and children as much as I loan about sweeping and mopping everyday I'm glad that it isn't carpet. Carpet would be filthy and the landlord probably wouldn't have rented to children and dogs!

TooMuchRain · 16/01/2014 18:18

I don't like carpets because of the dirt they hide/absorb so I would just buy a lovely thick rug
