Thinking of getting one. Has anyone got one and can tell me how good or not so good they find them?

I would recommend you do a fair bit of research on the safety side of these appliances. Im a gas safe registered engineer and I won't work on them. It is however a subject that divides opinions, im sure you could find many people to tell you they are safe!

We didn't have a flue for the gas fire in our last house, but as it was on an outside wall they put in a balanced flue. It was perfectly safe and we used to have it checked and serviced every year by British Gas.

Have you done any reading? The gas safety regulations state that they can't be installed in a room where they would be the primary heat source (eg a room without a radiator). The problem being that the risk increases if they are left running for long periods. They also require a very large air vent to be installed in the room. I honestly dont know anyone who would fit or work on one. Im not sure even British Gas will.

Perhaps a balanced flue gas fire as bunbaker mentioned?

The number of people and pets who have been asphyxiated by them in the UK is very small, but greater than zero.

Remember that the fumes, and the water vapour, are released into your home.

Are you planning to use it as an ornament, or as a source of heat?

I wonder how many people are suffering from low level poisoning for each person killed. The symptoms of persistant low level co exposure are very similar to mild illness, a feeling of being under the weather or a change in mood.
