We live in Bath and we have a 5yr old dd and 14 yr old ds. We live in a period house with only a shower room and my ds now uses our dining room as a bedroom and we only have a small table in kitchen. My dd also has a small room.

I love where we live but to get a bigger house is out of price bracket. we are consideing moving out about 7 miles. anyone else done anything similar?

Nooo, stay put. Your teenager will bloody hate you if you move to the middle of nowhere (and my limited knowledge of Bath suggests that seven miles away would be a bit, ahem, uneventful). Can you extend? Do you need a dining room? Think of the money you will save on stamp duty and perhaps use that to rethink your home and how it could be reworked to make it better for your family.

How much have you to spend? Do you like bath? I'm not that keen but there are lots of lovely places close by

Toecheese · 08/01/2014 20:23

Sorry see you like the location. What about buying a modern house in the same area you are presently?

freakazoidroid · 08/01/2014 20:43

no, we really have outgrown and there is no scope for extensions. we need a 4th bed/ study for my husband. he worksfrom home.

Is it worth getting an architect in to see if there is any internal reconfigure you could do, hidden spaces that might be used. Loft extension etc

freakazoidroid · 08/01/2014 21:02

thought about that, but our attic s not high enough:(

Get your husband to rent some office space or stick something in the garden? I saw a programme recently where people rented storage lockers and worked from those which seemed a brilliant idea to me.

BrownSauceSandwich · 08/01/2014 21:24

What are rental prices like in and around Bath? Might be an option to let your place and rent somewhere out of town? That way you could give it a try without burning bridges...

Are you sure a victorian roof isn't high enough? Have you spoken to a specialist loft company. We got a massive bedroom and large bathroom in ours (1930s terrace) and could have had 2 small doubles instead plus smaller bathroom.

have lived in bath in flat near assembly rooms.

I think some areas have bigger houses.

snow hill may less dodgy parts.

near victoria park/weston

oldfeild.

when you say move out? which direction?

saltford/keynsham.

bradford/trowbridge.

lived in trowbridge for a while as cheaper than bath was nice.
bradford on avon has loads nice period properties.

plus thinking about schools is your 14year old gcse year.

whats it like getting a decent primary place?
