Best floor for blue kitchen?

We have a small (would it be called galley? Confused ) kitchen with hideous vinyl flooring. DH and I are thinking of replacing it soon.

The way our house is set up is a small entry way and then a step up into a smallish dining room with the living room right beside. Both of these rooms have hardwood floors, but they're not in the best shape. We've talked of replacing the hardwood someday.

The kitchen is off the dining room and is pale blue, with white cabinets and a brown counter (one of those that's made to look like granite but isn't Wink) I'd like to just go whole hog and save up and get new hardwood installed in the kitchen, living and dining rooms all at once. Yes it will be expensive, yes it will be a pain to have everything out of all the rooms, etc, but then it will just all be done and over with, and also I think a hardwood floor would look best.

DH wants to do tile because then we could just do the one room. He likes the travertine, which I don't. Plain white subway tiles would be okay but the cabinets go down to the floor and are white as well, and I think it might look a bit off. DH suggested doing a decorative blue border around the edge but I think it might look like the bottom of the pool. :o

Suggestions??

Travertine is nice - but to help the rooms flow better, I would go for the hardwood throughout if it were me !

Thank you!

I actually don't like travertine much...objectively it is nice but I feel like it will date whereas hard wood always seems classic. At least to me! :)

I agree ! ( lol I have travertine ! ) it wasn't my choice !!! But in my house it's whoever pays for it gets the deciding vote !!

Don't get wood in the kitchen. The constant change in temperature makes the wood move and it can be a disaster if the washing machine leaks.
