Gurgling oil boiler help!

Looking for advice as to why my oil fired boiling is gurgling like a nutter when heating/hit water is turned off. It's been fine since we moved in three months ago. Boiler is Only 2 years old. I am worried its gonna blow up Blush

Any ideas?

Gurgling means air in the water. Bleed the rads. How many are gassy, and what colour is the water?

I expect it has a small feed and expansion tank in the loft. Lift the lid up, sit next to it with a torch while someone turns the heating on, runs it, and off. Does anything happen?

Thanks piglet, will get on it tomorrow - been a busy day/night. We have just moved in and its been fine until now. We used to have a gas combi boiler, but this oil fired central heating is all new. We have a huge tank downstairs but not sure whats upstairs....

you might have a cold water tank (large) in the loft, and a feed and expansion tank (small, rectangular) which is the one I am thinking of. It will have a large copper pipe rising up over it and bending down to discharge into the top. There may be mud at the bottom of this one.

Downstairs you are more likely to have a hot water cylinder not a tank. They come in various colours. Each colour has a meaning. This is true.

btw if you are not used to lofts, don't walk on the insulation. Walk on the wood. If it is covered up, feel for it carefully with your feet, or roll back the top layer. If you have any large boards you can take them up to stand on, they must rest on the wood. Do not stand on the end of a board which overhangs the wood or it will tip up. If it is too dusty come back down until you can get a dust mask (with a plastic valve on the snout) from a DIY shop. If you start to cough badly, sit down until you get your breath, then come down quickly.

it isn't going to blow up.

other issues - remember that oil boilers MUST be serviced annually, and to keep an eye on the oil level; pull out the knob to get a true reading of level.Monitor prices and buy when it is lower, do NOT have a standing order.

THanks for your help. I think we are going to get someone to come and service the boiler just to be on the safe side.

Piglet, thank you for being so in-depth - that is really helpful Smile
