Different coloured carpet on each stair. Am I mad?

Just that really. Flight of 12 stairs. I'm considering this as I can't find any stair carpets I like. Am I crazy, do you think? Grin

Sounds fantastic! What colours are you thinking about using?

Littlefish · 05/01/2014 17:56

I think if they were all different shades of the same colour e.g spectrum of blues, then it could look fantastic. I think it would look better as a runner, with painted wood each side acting as a unifying colour.

BunnyLebowski · 05/01/2014 17:57

I think it sounds great!

DorothyBastard · 05/01/2014 17:58

That sounds lovely, especially if they were all shades of the same colour, as Littlefish says. Post a picture if you do actually go through with it!

MerryMarigold · 05/01/2014 17:59

I think all the joins may be be a bit tricky but ask a carpet later what they think.

You get the idea...

OneHolyCow · 05/01/2014 18:09

Yeah rainbow stairs! Great!

TunipTheUnconquerable · 05/01/2014 18:10

They look great in the Pinterest pics but they're all painted rather than carpet and I suspect there's a reason for that - joining up loads of carpet sounds like a major hassle for the fitters, with lots of joins to come loose and be a potential tripping hazard. Also, you'd have to buy lots of different colours of carpet and you'd probably have a minimum amount of each one you'd have to buy, unless you can somehow get hold of offcuts in all the right colours, so it could work out expensive.

thornrose · 05/01/2014 18:18

Turnip - that is exactly what I was going to post! (give or take a word or two)

ditavonteesed · 05/01/2014 18:21

check out my stairs (on profile), not capet but I love them.

JacqueslePeacock · 05/01/2014 18:31

I don't want wood because of the noise and the danger of slipping (I have a very steep staircase), but yes - the painted ones are stunning! I was thinking of doing it as a runner.

I can see it might be a bit of a pain to fit, but the top and bottom stairs would already need to be done separately as they're a different shape, so it might not be too bad. I can't find any pictures online apart from this, which I do quite like: rossduttson.com/2013/10/15/to-carpet-or-not-to-carpet/comment-page-1/#comment-120

I was thinking that if I repeated the colour, say, every 4 stairs, I could buy a slightly larger piece of carpet in each colour - so this might avoid the minimum amount issue. I am a bit worried about the coming loose and slipping though.

I've seen them painted like that - thru look awesome. Carpet may be a hassle? We have the part you stand on painted white and the riser painted with blackboard paint, which we love Grin

Wigeon · 05/01/2014 18:38

Have you thought of going for a stripy carpet? eg here?

ISawMamaPizzaKissingSantaClaus · 05/01/2014 21:20

I am in the process of doing exactly this and I must say it looks fab.

Basically, we ripped off the old manky carpet. I have put black satin on the stairs and got some bespoke treads made in the colours I wanted (cream, brown and orange - going for a Moroccan themed stairs and landing). If you want to I can put you in touch with the ebay shop, it cost me only £35 incl delivery for 12 treads in my chosen colours and his customer service was great. Nice little family business. I'm glueing the treads down in the next 2-3 days, just waiting for the last coat of satin to dry, but it looks already fab.

This here was my inspiration and I have gone for the same colour scheme as the one on the right. It honestly looks super. The walls will be neutral, so the stairs really stand out nicely. Plus, you get the best of both worlds - soft stairs to walk on, but cool painted stairs on top of it.

ISawMamaPizzaKissingSantaClaus · 05/01/2014 21:22

Forgot - the shop also gives you glue for free with your treads, so they will stick and stay, no slipping issues.

MacaYoniandCheese · 05/01/2014 21:23

Oh my GOD! I Loooove it! Do it!

MillyMollyMama · 05/01/2014 23:17

No!

YippeeKiYayMakkaPakka · 05/01/2014 23:25

I think it could look really great. I agree that it could work out expensive though. Your best bet might be to go to a big carpet shop and have a rake through their offcuts (you'll need something durable for stairs), and then get an independent fitter.

Think it would cost a fortune to get it fitted unless you just do patches of carpet like ISawMamaPizzaKissingSantaClaus

flatmum · 06/01/2014 13:46

I love it! Always fancied doing that but dont really want painted stairs. If you work out how to do it in carpet let me know and I will shamelessy copy you!

MissCardew · 07/01/2014 13:15

Maybe something like this - I think it's one carpet but at first glance it looks like separate pieces

JacqueslePeacock · 07/01/2014 17:14

MissCardew, that's the same picture I linked to above! He says it is different pieces not all one carpet, although I agree with you that it looks like one piece.
