Is there anything I can do with my kitchen floor?

We're planning on doing a big kitchen makeover towards the end of next year, replacing units, worktops and flooring.

In the meantime, my kitchen floor (laminate) is knackered. It's split, balding and patchy. I did think of throwing some vinyl over the top to hide it until we can get it tiled properly in Amtico but I keep being told it's a bad idea, it needs to be properly boarded first.

Floor boards aren't an option really, they're also knackered with a huge, raised concrete beam running through the middle where the kitchen and dining room were knocked through.

We're concentrating on getting rid of debt and I can't bring myself to pay a large amount before that's done and before we've decided on the final layout but im not sure I can live with the floor either. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I would throw very cheap laminate over it. I wouldn't even stick it down properly as it would be harder to chuck afterwards. The weight of furniture in the room would hold it down enough temporarily. And if you're going to thrown it out after a few well placed screws straight through to the floor boards would be easy to remove.

I've seen laminate straight off the roll at 3.99 a metre - it's not nice but it's better than nothing Smile

lino, not bloody laminate

Live with the floor if you are trying to get rid of debt, you will thank yourself in the long run.

It depends if you want a temporary or permanent solution.

For a temporary one, yes, buy a cheap offcut to fit the space between cupboards and use that. It doesn't matter if it gets worn out or damaged - you'll be chucking it in a year anyway.

If it were me I'd be taking up the laminate too, as I would be unable to resist. Chuck it out. See what you have got and then start planning.

You can use the floor boards for now, even if they are ugly - but once you do have a proper floor put in, do the entire floor - then if you do change units etc one day the floor can remain.

I'm a bit impatient though - I gutted our kitchen over a few days the other year, took out everything - floors, tiles, walls.

it was scary as we're renting.

I then screeded the floor (concrete under anyway) and laid ceramic tiles wall to wall, then got the walls plastered, then started with worktop/sink etc. I hate having things in the house that I know are on their way out - I just have to get them out!

Btw all the boards will need boarding over with ply if you plan to put down a permanent floor surface like amtico/laminate/vinyl/tiles. It needs levelling and stabilising so there is almost zero movement. But do it when the units are out too.

The debt is definitely priority but we could afford a cheap solution no problem. If it was just unattractive I wouldn't mind so much but one of the DCs ended up with a cut toe from it.

That's what I was thinking Laurie but apparently any lump shows through. I suppose I could always get a sample and see how it looks.

Thanks Random. I know I need to do that for a permanent solution.

You sound like my DM, she rips out everything within days! Her house looks very nice though.

Smile wise woman! Your priority must be safety then. If it's unsafe then remove it now. Sort out a temp solution to what is left.

Have you thought about just laying sheets of hard board over it they can be stuck down with double sided carpet tape

Can you buy a secondhand rug? Sounds a real problem so hope you can remodel the kitchen and get the whole lot sorted out.
