How would you make this house look more attractive from the outside - paint, etc?

Just that, really. It looks a little strange to me but I can't figure out why - I'm not a very visual person I'm afraid. Please be nice about the house so if you think it's hideous and cant be fixed don't tell me!

Photo of house is in my profile pics. Thank you.

I was expecting something hideous with your build up, but that's a lovely looking house! Just different paint colours maybe?

CalamitouslyWrong · 04/01/2014 21:22

It's not horrible at all.

I agree that it might be the paint colours making it seem off rather than anything else. In the photo it looks like a combination of white, cream and black. It might look better in different colours. You could also paint the front door a different colour so it stands out more.

That's a relief Grin, thank you both! Calamity, yes it's black, cream, and white and doesn't quite match the next door's colours (I read somewhere that semis look better if they match?).

Any colour suggestions gratefully received. Such as - paint everything cream with a duck egg blue door and duck egg blue window trim?? I think two colours rather than three might work better but then it really won't match!

I had to look long and hard at your house before seeing anything that I thought may improve it - it looks fine to me.

One thing I did notice is the black paint. Next door only has black above their front door amd, as a result I think their house looks 'softer' and a little less 'austere' than yours does. Other than that, a few larger shrubs in tubs?

nonicknameseemsavailable · 04/01/2014 22:12

I think the black is the problem. I don't think it has to match the one next door to you, tone in possibly but not match and it looks like yours has more detail on it than theirs anyway which will still be there even if you don't pick it out so boldly. You don't really want to change the cream I don't think - it will be the cheapest bog standard colour when it needs repainting in the future I expect. So I would look at bringing the white and black bits into cream where you can. Frames are fine white o duck egg or sage or whatever shade you want to go with, I would just personally think a softer colour rather than a bright colour will work best. but then my house is grey pebbledash so I am not sure I am the best person to comment - I dream about doing up the outside of ours.

It's lovely but I'd lose the black except above the door and paint it all cream... and add some nice colourful baskets / planters in the spring.

NinjaBunny · 04/01/2014 22:23

I would:

Add some nice hanging baskets and plants outside.

Paint the exterior all cream rather than the cream/white/black combo.

Paint the front door a colour. Red. Purple. Royal Blue. Even black or slate grey. At the moment the door is pretty invisible - like wearing foundation over your lips. I think you need to see a door, not blend it in.

lalalonglegs · 04/01/2014 22:50

It's fine but if, imo, would benefit from losing the black trim and the swaggy curtains. I'd prefer a period front door. Perhaps plant the garden a little to soften it but, really, there's nothing wrong with it as such. I like pale blue-grey on houses if you really want to repaint it.

Brilliant, it looks like the answers are pretty much unanimous that the black must go. I think it makes the house look like it is has stern beetle brows and is looking down harshly at the street! I like the all cream with door and possible window sill accents. Will have a think about colours. Thanks again, all!
