Work in Wimbledon - where could we live (rental)?

I am considering applying for a job in Wimbledon village. We currently live abroad and I don´t know London well, so I would really appreciate some help finding suitable areas. We would need a 3 bed house/flat. DD13 and DS10 would be at school where I work so school catchment is not important.

I am trying to work out whether the salary this job offers would allow us to live on the one salary until my DH finds a job or whether he would have to stay behind in his present job until he finds new employment.

Our financial capital is locked in the house we live in now. We would be returning here in between 3 to 6 years so are not considering selling.

Where could we look for rental that is cheaper than in Wimbledon? We would be commuting by public transport, or preferably by bike (maybe a mad idea).

It is such a long time since I lived in the UK, so I am feeling a bit helplessHmm

If it's been a while since you lived here be prepared for a bit of shock when it comes to renting Sad.

Colliers Wood and Morden are both near to WImbledon and much cheaper but a bit dreary. Raynes Park is one stop down the mainline from Wimbledon station and has quite a nice buzz about it but is considerably cheaper. Earlsfield is one stop up from Wimbledon mainline and again quite buzzy but probably not that much cheaper these days. There is also an area around Merton Road (a long busy road that divides Earlsfield from Southfields) which has some cheap pockets in it. Merton Park has some really nice roads in it but I don't know about prices - it was always considered much cheaper than Wimbledon but those days may be gone.

Wimbledon is one of those areas that cover - in estate agentese at least - huge areas. Wimbledon Village is eye-wateringly expensive but the bit near Colliers Wood is more reasonable although still called Wimbledon. If you're prepared to travel a bit further, then going out into Surrey along the mainline train routes will get you more bang for your buck - Motspur Park/New Malden etc.

I'm intrigued as to which school, as I'm not aware of any co-ed through schools in Wimbledon Village. It may be that the school isn't exactly in the Village and that might give you more scope as to where to live eg Raynes Park or New Malden, and you could still easily get there by bus/bike.
PM me if you like - I know the area fairly well

I've lived in Wimbledon village (tiny rented flat) and now live 2 stops on mainline train line from Wimbledon. Happy to chat. One thing about the cycling, Wimbledon village is at the top of a blooming big hill! I'm just a light weight tho!
