painting over gloss

Hi after much googling where no thread seems to fit my situation Im hoping someone somewhere will have the answer! I am in the middle of painting my son's room and one wall is cladded. It is a fairly large wall and is painted with gloss which is chipped and dented. I want to paint it to finish off the room but not sure how to prep and what paint to use for the best result that will not take me forever to finish. Anything I have read online gives conflicting advice.

TIA x

We live in Scandinavia, so lots of experience with painted cladding Wink

This is how I do it:

  1. sand gloss lightly
  2. apply a coat of water-based primer
  3. fill any deep scratches or chips with water-based filler. Allow to dry and sand
  4. apply 2 coats of water based gloss, eggshell or whatever finish you want. I don´t use oil based products any more as the water-based ones we can get here (I use Jotun) are just as good as oil based. If you use water-based paint make sure you turn the heating down/off while you are painting. Too much heat makes the paint dry too quickly and it is difficult to touch up drips etc,
