What's it like in living in Corringham/Stanford-le-hope?

Please only tell me good things - there may be bad things, but I'd rather not hear about them. I'm quite happy to stick my head in the sand and ignore the bad bits as long as I can find the good bits.

Where is good to live?
Where is good to shop?
Are the buses normally on time?
Are there nice parks or things/places to see?

Please be gentle

Good shopping at Lakeside which is not too far away

Thanks - good thought

I am going up to see dearest darling friend who lives in Corringham! Been travelling up there for a few years now. Was about to write more but might 'out' myself! Area itself is perfectly pleasant and I am quite happy for DD to go off to the park on her own when we are there. I have never seen anything disturbing. Quiet and sleepy is more the type of words I would use but I like that type of thing. You might not. It's not posh Essex but it is not grotty Basildon either. Middle - Older demographics, parade of shops including hairdressers, gift shops, fruit & veg stalls, large supermarket, cafes, pubs, restaurants and take-outs. For a small place to my mind it seems rather well served. Also has its own primary school.

Lovely large park with great green panoramic views over surrounding area when standing just by the park (it's my fave view by far).

Teenagers often hang around the cafe in 'town' but this is no issue to me as they are just doing what teens do. Great cafe by the way. Huge portions and nice milkshakes, stays open late. As I have said I have been going up there since 2006 and I have never seen nor been told of any trouble. I can ask my friend some questions on your behalf if there is anything you would like to know.

Before I started driving I would get the train in from London (Fenchurch St/Tower Hill) to Stanford-Le-Hope (did you know Russel Brand grew up there? Neither did I till I got chatting to a random woman who turned out to be his LOVELY mom in the queue at Nationwide Building Society in Stanford one day!). Never had no problems with trains, though Sunday service like anywhere outside of London kinda sucks. As mentioned line serves Lakeside which is kind of half way from Stanford and London. Stanford seems to have a younger family demographic and new builds are here and less so in Corringham (older established families). These are just my observations and are not to be taken as official or anything. There is another big supermarket in Stanford. All the cab stations are here too. More pubs, working men's club, petrol garage and seafood bar plus other things I am sure I have not noticed. 3 mins drive from Stanford to Corringham or a 15-20min relaxed walk. Buses are regular and arrive on time.

Places to see? That I don't know but I guess living so close to country side you could get a NT membership and plan days out. Southend is on the train line also.

It always struck me as being a clever little affordable spot that could most definitely work if you worked in central London because the connection is jammily good.

HTH, and as I said if you have any specific questions just note them in here. We leave to see darling friend around 11ish! Hate the thought of the dartford tunnel to deal with but she is worth it. Oooh that is another positive, Essex to Kent from there is easy peasy. If you drive you can choose Bluewater over Lakeside without losing breath. Okay, might make more sense of course to go Lakeside but the tunnel makes the side I am on (SE London/Kent/Bromley/Sevenoaks et al) so easily accessible.

So random to see this thread btw Smile

11ish tomorrow morning that is, not tonight! As I said Corringham is more for sleeping than raving!

KatyMac · 03/01/2014 22:39

Thanks - that's loads of info, great!

Which supermarket?

The transport towards Norfolk is a bit crap tho'

You are most welcome KatyMac! Supermarket wise, Morrison is in Corringham and Tesco is in Stanford. Re driving to Norfolk, I had to drive to Ipswich for a job last year and the bit of Essex you want is Colchester if I remember correctly. It is fooking far though (Colchester that is). If my darling friend lived in Colchester I would see her a lot less IMHO and look forward to the journey even less so in terms of traffic, petrol and general stress.

Norfolk however, according to my RM finger research, is lurvley and if I didn't have 'responsibilities' I would so consider it as a moving option. Green (love nature me!), affordable and not that far from London (though why that should be referenced in every bleeding property post is beyond me seeing as I can't abide the place but have to stick it for now due to work).

Where do you need to commute to? Or is it family you are thinking of?

KatyMac · 03/01/2014 22:58

Thanks, it's complicated so I PM'ed you

Did you have a nice time?

nessus · 05/01/2014 22:20

Allo! Yes, we did. Off to pm you now

Chewbecca · 06/01/2014 10:20

You can have a walk along the sea wall

You can visit the Bell Inn gastro pub in nearby Horndon which is my favourite in the whole world!

DS loves to visit nearby Tilbury Fort. Watch out for opening hours/days.

And you can always take the train to London or Southend for days out.

Thanks - sorry I forgot to respond before Blush

Hello really hope you both don't mind me jumping in and I know it's been a long time from when you spoke about this but me and my husband at Christmas decided that it was time to move out of London with our. Two children and with our jobs Essex would be good as we both drive and our jobs will still be in London but 7 months later still have not moved and why we haven't because it's been so hard every time we find somewhere we like there is so much bad on The internet or people are so happy to tell us how bad it is then I see what you had to say I'm really hope it's where at last our new life should be but it's so scary have not seen anything bad about corringham but after looking at the school it don't seem to be going well when it comes to the education part for our girls so hoping you know of a good school or anything else we should know all we want is to give our girls an amazing childhood with lots of green aka playing doing things kids don't seem to be able to do anymore in London and I'm going to be leaving all my friends which at 28 is very scary as the older u get is not easy to find new one .
Thank you for any info or help you can give us many thanks nikki

EssexMummy123 · 04/08/2014 22:12

Hey, Nikki - Corringham is fine and is actually close to a great country park, shopping at Lakeside and easily commutable to London Liverpool Street, but the more North in Essex you travel the better really - look at Chelmsford - nice area, all good schools and in fact some exceptionally good schools.

EssexMummy123 · 04/08/2014 22:43

Probably meant Fenchurch street :-)

NIKITA86WEST · 05/08/2014 22:36

Thank you
