Can you find me the perfect place to live?

Criteria are quite broad..

I'd like to be within 20 minute drive of the sea & in the UK

DH would like it to be mountainous or at least very hilly!

DC would like to be near an airport & train links to major cities..

Surely this place must exist?!

I thought trainspotting was set in Edinburgh?? Anyway OP I live in England but love Glasgow - I admit I wasn't all that keen to go there but once you visit, you will love it!

scottishmummy · 27/12/2013 22:48

Trainspotting Book, leith and Edinburgh.filmed mainly glasgow though

cantthinkofagoodone · 27/12/2013 22:48

No

cantthinkofagoodone · 27/12/2013 22:49

Northern Ireland!

Froblawd · 27/12/2013 22:49

South Wales. I'm in the SE but I pretty much tick all the boxes you've mentioned.

herladyship · 27/12/2013 22:51

Obviously I've upset you Scottishmumny.. I apologise!

Clearly, I'm intelligent enough just to know that trainspotting is not representative of Glaswegians but I was being honest when I said its the first image in my head when someone says 'Glasgow'

In terms of location & 'ticking boxes' Glasgow is good for us, so believe me when I say i'd love to put stereotypes aside & fall in love with all it's good points!

No offended,am genuinely bemused one movie has such resonance
TV and movies generally show gritty stuff I just don't expect it to have lasting impact
If you chose based on TV/film you'd live in tv comedy surburbia.no Glaswegians there

wetaugust · 27/12/2013 23:04

Local Hero - had a very lasting impact on me Grin

scottishmummy · 27/12/2013 23:06

My weans like ballamory, doesn't mean I want to live there
I'm partial to a bit eastenders but don't be moving to walford anytime soon

invicta · 27/12/2013 23:07

Kent fits your criteria

scottishmummy · 27/12/2013 23:10

Budget,how much mula?Schools,state or private?
State,You'll need to look into catchment areas build search around that
Private, catchment not issue will be proximity to school you can get into
Employment,Do you both work?

beatricequimby · 27/12/2013 23:12

Herladyship- come for a city break in Glasgow. What kind of things do you like in a city? We will tell you where to go.

I think there are parts of any big city that could make you think of Trainspotting but Glasgow is a fab place to live.

How old are your dcs? What do they think?

Grockle · 27/12/2013 23:13

I was going to say Dorset but we lack big hills.

lalalonglegs · 27/12/2013 23:13

Newcastle has lovely beaches, some very rugged countryside within a few miles, an airport and trains to all over the place. I love it (I also love Glasgow but wanted to offer an alternative).

scottishmummy · 27/12/2013 23:16

If your kids are school age you'll need to look into catchments, google the LA
Do you want urban, shops facilities near.or the out of town yomp down drive
Employment what's the criteria there

Glimmerberry · 27/12/2013 23:16

Nairn.

Beautiful light sandy beach, sea views, mountainous backdrop (not far from Cairngorms) and very near Inverness airport. Think that ticks all the boxes!

anapitt · 27/12/2013 23:19

Glasgow

Abzs · 28/12/2013 00:25

That's what I was thinking glimmerberry, or Montrose area.

herladyship · 28/12/2013 08:52

DS is 19 so will be a visitor rather than a permanent resident, but I'd still like it to feel like 'home' to him

DD is 13, in year 8 in a fab state school that we'd be mad to give up! She has the option to board Mon-Fri in 6th form though (& is very keen on this idea) so in 3-4 years we could be 'good to go'

DH is a social worker in drug & I'm an Occupational Therapist.. We'll be using a mixture of inheritance & equity from our current house to finance the move.. The less we spend the more chance of retiring early so somewhere cheap would be fabulous! Grin

That should read DH works in drug & alcohol rehab... not that he's on drugs

Angus.
If you were near the A90 you're commutable distance from Dundee & Aberdeen.

Coastline - Sandy beaches galore

Angus glens for walks/hills

member · 28/12/2013 09:06

Oh, Aberdeen airport is main hub but Dundee does have a teeny one.
Trains main East Coast London to Aberdeen with stations at Arbroath & Montrose

herladyship · 28/12/2013 09:35

also, the proximity to the sea is for bracing walks with the dog rather than bucket & spade type activities..

There are some amazing beaches in Angus and Aberdeenshire, Newburgh/ Ellon area probably within 20 min of Aberdeen airport and some amazing sandy beaches up there. Deeside has the forests and mountains but a bit further to beach.
