if the seal has gone on double-glazing does the whole window need to be replaced?

Our windows are all about 13 years old and a couple are about 20. All are double glazed. The older ones in particular mist up dreadfully, but also one or two of the more recent ones are starting to.

I presume the seals have gone. Does this mean the entire windows need to be replaced or can they be resealed?

the glass pane can be taken out and replaced with a new one. In your town there will be more than one glazing supplier who orders sealed units to the size you need, and more than one installer who specialises in repairing and fitting, who will measure, order, supply and fit. It is a very common job.

If you invite a window salesman into your home he will tell you to buy new windows. This will cost about ten times as much.

You can get a company to replace the glass only. Surprisingly cheap. I think we paid £17 for a standard pane of glass. It's more expensive if the glass is leaded, but still not a huge amount. 50 quid, I think.

The uPVC is the expensive part of the windows.

x-post with John!

oh that's good to know thank you! I've been worried about the cost. The company who fitted the more recent windows and gave a 20/25 year guarantee has, of course, now gone out of business!d

If you are lucky, you may find that the guarantee is underwritten by (I think this is right name) FENSA. That is a national organisation and you would be protected by it.

Can't get at my file to check our paperwork because the Xmas tree is in front of it. John will know the details, I'm sure.
