Replacement for laminate? What would you put down now?

Following on from the other thread, I was wondering what you would now put down to replace laminate?

We have just moved and there is laminate in the downstairs rooms that is an ugly colour and seems to be coming unstuck. For the dining room, I would like to replace with tiles but slightly worried it might be a re-sale problem. For the sitting room, we would like wooden floorboards but the originals are a mess and we can't afford new hardwood.

So, I was wondering, what would you go for in your own house?

I have, in my own house , got new floorboards on exposed floor areas. I had it done while this was a pet free home - we now have a dog, and I am beginning to wish I'd gone for solid oak floorboards not solid pine - but at the time it wasn't an issue and Pine cost less so we chose pine !!
In clients homes we have replace laminates for Karndean and Amtico for hard wearing flooring in a good range of colours .

Just a shameful post to mark place as I want something woody that isn't £££££ Smile

Engineered wood.

Have just replaced laminate with tiles in 2nd reception room. So much better!
Tiles won't affect the resale value but crappy laminate would.

Look at the engineered oak in B&Q

Second hand solid oak. Cheap as chips, but I spent a lot of time on eBay and it will need sanding and oiling.

CointreauVersial · 11/12/2013 23:52

Engineered wood. Not too expensive and tons nicer than laminate.

All interesting, I didn't even realise second hand was an option, off to explore ebay...

Oh yes! Just watch out for wood that's been stuck down and has loads of adhesive on it, check that they haven't damaged the tongues taking it up and it's nice if it's denailed, but not essential. We got 30m of solid oak for a hundred quid, that will need sanding and oiling but is otherwise perfect (although that was a ludicrous bargain) for the kitchen diner. I also got 15m of engineered wood for our bedroom that only really needs a bit of a clean up and a spot of oil for £80. I have been looking at nice laminate (about £7m from Uk Flooring direct is nice) but I'm already on eBay all the time anyway, and I think I'll probably manage to do the whole house. In our utility we're putting down vinyl tiles (gerfloor pop in white) and in the bathrooms we're going for sheet vinyl.

Only problem is now I'm looking for at least 50m to do the original downstairs, and I'm struggling to find that much in one lot.
