RAL Colours HELP!

We have to choose the colour for the guttering, dormer border and front door of our new house. 1900s Victorian yellowish brick, bay windows and pointed (triangular) dormer. Sorry, for poor description - house novice here.

So far, so exciting! But... we thought we wanted to take the opportunity to go for a colour. The houses either side are black and white and look drab. We thought maybe RAL 3003 or 3004 . But not sure if it will look too brassy etc. Is the RAL colour chart onscreen a fair representation of the actual colour, in people's experience?

And also - are we mad to go for a red?

Even if they are called a specific RAL colour, the company's interpretation will vary from brand to brand. So if 2 different people made RAL 3004 guttering, they would be unlikely to be the same colour.
But the computer shades aren't that far out.
Its sometimes easier to see the true colour here as you get a white surround, rather than the RAL shade before and after.

Can you go for a wander around near the house, and see if anyone else has gone for a different colour?

Thanks for the link and info.

There are some other houses with colour, though not exactly the same as our house. And they've gone for a bright blue which we don't really like.

Have just tried crudely painting an image of the house with a dark purple red like RAL and think it looks good!

Right, assuming your in microsoft, when you go to choose the colour, select more, then customise, and you get a square with every possible microsoft colour in.
In the three boxes below that type
168, 0, 48 for 3003
117, 34, 44 for 3004

you should be able to tint the right colour, although the ruby red looks very bright, it usually does a good conversion, so worth seeing 3003 in in plastic if your interested.

Go to a Dulux Decorator Centre - loads of them nationwide. They can give you accurate charts / samples / advice. Google the website address and see if there's one near you. The staff really know their stuff (unlike B&Q / Homebase staff).

So helpful, thank you!

Am having a go now. Is the Red/Green/Blue ratio somewhere easily available for all RAL colours or do you have special access to it?

OK, have tried that nextphase and yep, the ruby red suddenly does look very bright. But purple red looks dull and brownish!

What do you mean by 'does a good conversion'?

The guttering is going to be powder -coated aluminium that we're ordering directly, then we'll be painting the dormer (and probably door) if that makes any difference.

Thanks for letting me pick your brain btw.

Its available, on the web buit convoluted! - take the Lab values from the first link I sent, convert them here by telling it first that you want to enter in CIE Lab, putting in the numbers, and then putting the numbers it chucks out into excel etc.

It does a decent conversion I mean converting all these different color systems into different formats. It sometimes goes quite wrong.

Now I'm at work, I've looked at RAL3003. Its quite bright. Ruby Red is a good description of it. Alternativly think of the colour a child would call red. Its that sort of colour. Purple red is quite brown / marron ish.

Time for a name change, me thinks! Outed!!!

I often wonder why people want to hide their behind a username ?! You have been really insightful and helpful! And have helped the OP from making a costly mistake !! That's admirable !! You get a round of applause from me - who ever you are !! ( oh are you really batman ?! ) lol !! Have a great day !

The color stuff I've put above is a rather specialized area, so anyone who works for me will probably identify me from the website combinations I've used, and I'm not sure I want them to be able to follow "me" rather than "work me"
So not about hiding in MN, but hiding from real life.

Ah ! Ok !! Your secret is safe with me ! Especially after you change your name !!! Lol !!
