Is there such a thing as a naice PIR light ?

I'm trying to replace my outdoor lighting, at the mo it's a combination of switched lighting and those hideous black security floodlights on sensors (3 of which are knackered).

I'm looking for something in a fairly trad / classic style (think Jim Lawrence / Garden Trading) but I want it on PIR / motion sensor. Can I find it ? Can I hell. All of the PIR stuff I can find is either really utilitarian like the big black floodlights or far too modern for what I'm looking for.

I know I can buy a separate PIR sensor that you can fit alongside your 'normal' light to convert it to a sensor light but they are generally ugly plastic things in black or white that will stand out a mile and ruin the nice lights.

Do nice PIR lights exist ?

What about this
Or this
Or more traditional this
I like this one and this one and this one

You can get PIR or dusk to dawn bulbs to go in a normal lamp?

I like the Luxembourg one, not keen on the shiny finish though. Style is right. Thanks wonkylegs Smile

Bulbs ? This is new on me.

How do they 'know' to come on ?

Soz can't help but you can help me :)

I've been looking for a light that comes on when I walk up our path. I've gone across mention of PIR. What is it please?

UsedToBeNDP · 02/12/2013 22:29

It just means that it has a motion sensor and so the light will come on when there is movement.

(It works by infrared, if something 'breaks' the light beam, the security light comes on).

Is this any good if you don't want shiny

UsedToBeNDP · 02/12/2013 22:52

That's nice, wonky. I like that one. Thank you

Be careful with how much actual light they give off, I've just changed two pretty lights for hideous flood lights because you couldn't tell when the old ones were on or off :/

if you buy a separate PIR, it does not have to be next to the lamps. It can be up and out of the way, under the eaves if you want. just find some lamps you like.

But remember that an energy-saving lamp in a dusk-to-dawn lamp uses so little electricity that it is very cheap to run. For example my porch lamp is 11W and will run for 91 hours (say, ten days) on 14p worth of electricity.

Say, £5 a year.

We have exactly what piglet john suggests. Naice down lighter above our doorway, then light sensor box (so that it does dawn till dusk) hidden well above that in the top corner of the porch eaves. LED bulb in the down lighter so it costs pennies (not quite as nice light as halogen, but I'm being picky, it's not far off).

it's not flood light level of lighting but definitely a welcoming light and enough to light the path.

Ah thank you kind folk of MN. Good news that the sensor can be away from the lights. I think I'll get a sparky out for some advice & a quote.
