Slate tiled fireplace - help wanted

We've knocked through the chimney breast in our back kitchen/diner and are having a stove installed. Opening is just below head height and we are going with a dark grey slate hearth with render in the recess that we'll paint. We're thinking of tiling part way up the wall in the same slate, in part to protect the paintwork from marks by logs etc.

How far up do you think we should go? Tiler reckons about 10-15 cm above height of stove (stove about 63 cm high) but I'm thinking this too much? The adjacent skirting board on the front of the chimney breast is 22 cm high, I'm thinking maybe just up to here? Or if we stack logs higher than this should we go higher?

Want to order the tiles tonight so could do with sorting this out......

I don't think anyone can advise without seeing how it looks. Have you got some dark coloured paper and blutack with which you can do a mock-up?

I thought about that, and getting a cardboard box in lieu of the stove (too heavy to temporarily move into position!) I'll have a rummage and see what I can find..
