Hi

I am in the daft position of having a decorator arriving tomorrow and I still have not decided on paint colours for my living room.

I have a new navy velvet sofa and the curtains are ordered also in navy velvet. I did think I was going to go for an Art Deco look but the house is old and the room is already quite dark.

Its painted in Cornforth White at the moment. I might just choose something neutral so I don't regret it and because I am in a panic ! Maybe a Savage Ground type colour?

Any thoughts would be really gratefully received ! T

Thanks Guys xx

I always always always recommend F & B Shaded White on these threads. It is a lovely soft greyish white. I think a soft grey would look fab with the navy and also would be warming. Or if you are brave enough to go a slightly darker grey, and embrace the fact that the room is quite dark, I like Charleston Grey.

What was your original coice of colour before you started panicking?

I'd say stick with the Art Deco look and, as MissRed says, embrace the fact that the room is quite dark. Invest in lots of lamps and cosy lighting.

The sofas and curtains sound lovely.

This is going to be the least helpful comment ever, but you can regret neutral if hat you really wanted was bold. On the other hand, I think yellowish neutrals are a natural foil for navy, so savage ground might be what you're after. What else is going on in the room? Any unpainted wood and in what sort of colour? What's the floor?

MrsLettuce · 01/12/2013 09:48

borrowed light?

MrsLettuce · 01/12/2013 09:49

yy, neutrals are eminently regrettable. I've regretted going too conservative far more often than I care to remember.

I agree with a light grey\stone colour...Egyptian cotton is really nice..and goes well with blue.

Ah thanks so much !

Originally I was thinking about going dark . I have samples of Harwicke White , Elephants Breath, Mouse's Back (I think ). A very stylish friend of mine did suggest Charleston Grey.

The floors are original parquet, which is actually pine. There is quite a large bay window and high ceilings. The house was built about 1920. The wood is all painted white as are the ceilings, picture rail and cornicing.

I have had an extension done back in February and the kitchen is painted in Blackened and Downpipe, so the whole house is quite grey at the moment !

Thanks for all the help.

xx

yy, yy and yy to dark. Charleston Grey looks nice. The other shades you mention I'm not finding on the the site but dark would be fab.

I'd be tempted to do something really deep and warm like brinjal or pitch blue or maybe even studio green with white above the picture rail as well as on the ceiling.

Savage ground rather than grey as its everywhere and I think SG would be lovely with navy velvet

noddyholder · 01/12/2013 16:47

We had brinjal in our last living room it was gorgeous I am living in one of my developments atm and it is EB and I really hate it

So, did you manage to make a choice in time, Chick?

Chick999 · 02/12/2013 10:52

Hi Mrs Lettuce,

I have asked the decorator to get some Savage Ground - I know I should be a bit more bold ! I am going to start looking for some nice textures with the rug, lamps and cushions to keep it deco.

My heart was saying Charleston Grey but I wimped out a bit as I was in a panic and also DH complained that the house is too grey at the moment, so (for once) he was allowed some input !

I found the Houzz website really useful this weekend as you can search against the paint colour you are considering and it usually has a room or two painted in that colour which you can take a look at.

Thanks so much for everyone's help. I cant tell you how much I appreciated it !

Thank you
