help with kitchen/diner lighting

hello, we're just having a kitchen diner extension done. Dining area at the far end, with bifold doors onto the garden. Spotlights over the kitchen area, and I'd planned to have 3 x pendants over the dining table at the other end.

But I looked at it today and realised that pendants will break up the view through the bifold doors quite a lot - in fact to me it sort of negates part of the reason of having the doors.

I don't really want spots over the dining area as they seems quite cold and clinical, but can't think what other options there are. Maybe a track? I wanted something a bit softer but can't think of anything that isn't a pendant.

Any suggestions? thank you in advance.

I didn't want pendant lights over my dining table either because it would drive me to distraction if the lights were not exactly central over the table. Our new kitchen/dining area is big and I wanted to have the flexibility of being able to move the dining table and sofas around. Having pendant lights would mean the dining table would have to stay in the same position.

I have gone for those LED recessed ceiling lights. Not ideal but they do the job. We have them on 3 separate circuits so the kitchen, dining area and sitting area can be on or off separately. I also intend to get dimmer switches for them which will give more flexibility. The other good thing about them is they make the room appear higher than it is.

I do have two pendants over the island again on a separate circuit.
I have a standard lamp in one corner and two table lamps on side tables. I like to use candles in the dining area and I am on the look out for a couple of wall sconces. I did consider getting wall lights but again I think this restricts the placement of furniture so decided against them.

i think that's what we'll have to go with - I agree I reckon spots (i mean those recessed led ones - don't know why i call them spots!) on a separate circuit, with a dimmer is the best option. thank you
