Sanderstead/Purley Oaks/South Croydon - is the plane noise really bad?

Just a quick question really. I realise it's all not far from Gatwick, but I've never been to the area of South Croydon, so have no idea whether the flypaths are straight over Sanderstead or not. This area, esp Purley Oaks used to be a good residential area long ago, no idea what's it like now, but probably not great as the prices are low.
As a point of ref, the noise is seriously bad near Heathrow in Hounslow (couldn't even consider it), is this as bad? thanks!

No plane noise that I'm aware of and I live further south than Purley Oaks

beaglesaresweet · 27/11/2013 11:23

thank you, playftse. Are you much more south? I'm looking just above P.Oaks towards Sanderstead. Can you tell me anythign about te area please? need to make quick decisions. Where do you do shopping, any good supermarkets around? I went once by bus to sutton from Kenley via Brighton rd, not a good high st really, though I haven't looked closely.

Sanderstead is a v good area, Brighton Road is a major thoroughfare so not a major shopping high street. There is a nice little highstreet in Sanderstead, plus Croydon has major shopping centres. Loads of supermarkets, giant Sainsburys in Purley Way, Croydon, huge Tesco's at Purley, Waitrose at Sanderstead. You need to visit to check for yourself...

beaglesaresweet · 27/11/2013 14:00

thanks play, that's great news about a little high st (is it called High st.?) - even visitng briefly doesn't help as you need time and knowledge of where to look! I will study the map meanwhile for all these places you ve mentioned.

The shops in Sanderstead are on the Limpsfield Road, just up from Waitrose

I too live slightly further south. I never noticed the plane noises UNTIL my toddler became obsessed with planes and commented every time a plane or helicopter flew over. At times it seemed like every five minutes. Before that it was background noise and I never really noticed it. In the summer it's much worse. If it's something that your sensitive to, i would definitely suggest spending an hour outside in the area and clock how bad it would be.

I agree Sanderstead is lovely and the area in general is child friendly and close proximity to shops, parks, etc. Primary schools excellent but tiny catchment areas. The two things that kept us from moving there are 1) limited secondary state school options and 2) it's quite a journey to the train station, and uphill ride home which might prove tricky in the winter. Parking is also limited at the station. I imagine people drive to Purley or Warlingham if they need to park near a station.

Hth.

On shopping: There's also a Costco on Purley Way. And on the Brighton Road there's a Tesco Express and coming soon will be a smaller Sainsburys Local and Morissons to South Croydon/Purley Oaks area so easy do a smaller shop during the week.

GrandPoohBah · 27/11/2013 15:29

I'm in Selsdon and I've never noticed it...

beaglesaresweet · 27/11/2013 17:24

Erac, see if you are used to it because you always libed there, it doesn't count Grin. Good advice re spending time outside (too cold right now, but I will tyr to have at least solid 30 min). The pesky planes also tend to change routes. I find that so many areas are blighted by this - even central plcaes like battersea is MUCH worse than they used to be.
GrandPooh - I'm goign tomorrow so I will see, but your post gives me hope Grin.
playftse - thanks, very helpful!

had a look on the map - the Sanderstead village is quite a hike from the station (30min?), a bit strange that it's so spread out, but still probably quick by bus/car. The properties I'm looking at are just north from the station.

Plane noise? There isn't any!!

SoupDragon · 27/11/2013 17:33

Are you going to be wanting a primary school any time soon? If so you need to think about catchment areas.

Noseynoonoo · 27/11/2013 20:09

Sanderstead station is not in Sanderstead to be honest, it's in South Croydon but there was already a station with that name!

I'd say it's a 15 walk up the hill to Limpsfield road - depends how fit you are!

I have fairly recently moved to Sanderstead via Battersea and East Croydon. The plane noise is here is considerably lower to the extent that I don't notice it.

I recently downloaded the free Plane Finder App (nerd emoticon required). Very few planes fly by and they are actually Heathrow bound so still high up.

Have you thought of posting a question Mumsnet Local Croydon?

beaglesaresweet · 27/11/2013 23:01

Nosey, well I did say in my OP that it's near the station to the North, hopefully there is no drastic chage in the quality of the area. I'm ok with hills - living in a hilly area now. I'm sure there aer buses too!
Exactly - eveb nattersea is bad now - despite being so expensive. Good to know it's better even though I'm still amazed, being by Gatwick - they must all go in the other direction.
Anyway, I'm there tomorrow viewing something, so will report on that. Too early to post on Local, I have to like it myself first, but this info was essential, so thank you all!
Ha ha, thhere is a plane app now!

Croydon is about 20 miles from Gatwick. Hardly next door. By the time any get here, they are pretty much too high to hear.

nooka · 28/11/2013 17:28

We used to live in Coulsden, just a little bit further out than Purley. I didn't notice the planes as being any noisier than where I grew up in Greenwich (ie not an issue at all). My sister lived in Hounslow for a while and the noise was in a totally different ball park, just not comparable at all. Apart from anything else the volume of planes flying in and our of Heathrow is double that of Gatwick. I couldn't have lived in Hounslow personally. South Croyden way is a nice sort of area I think. Croyden is a great shopping area and there used to be some great restaurants along the road going down to Purley.
