is it possible to get Victorian tiles up without breaking them?

We're having a kitchen diner extension/renovation and completely unexpectedly have found original Victorian tiles under the kitchen tiles. They look in really good condition.

They can't stay down as they are far too cold, we need a damp proof membrane and insulation down, also the room is too big and it only covers a smaller area.

However I really don't want to just screed over them! I'd love to put them in the hall but builder says they're too thin and will break when removing them. Google says similar. Is there any way I can remove them?

Try SPAB - society for protection of ancient buildings www.spab.org.uk who have a technical advice line Mon-Fri 09:30-12:30 I think. Or www.victoriansociety.org.uk which has a section on encaustic tiles (assuming they are encaustic). Probably possible to do, but with very very careful handling, and you'd probably lose some in the process.
