Need to find a kitchen tap

MoonlightandRoses · 21/11/2013 22:26

Anyone any good on-line suggestions to start looking? Don't really know what exactly I want yet other than:

Lines need to be as simple as possible
Needs to be a mixer (monobloc?/single column?) type
Needs to work with these kitchen units and handles

All suggestions gratefully received!

Wow that a beautiful kitchen! I have just bought the Reginox Thames Tap swan neck style - only £50

MoonlightandRoses · 21/11/2013 22:43

Thank you - that one is a definite contender!

Try abode taps - we had one on our old house that was fab and our joiner then recommended them again
We're going for this one in nickel
as I like simple lines and the nickel finish worked well for us before.

wonkylegs · 22/11/2013 07:06

They do a single column version
They aren't as cheap as some but they are good quality and we never had a problem with them.

notablob · 22/11/2013 07:10

Ooh wonky that's lovely.

PigletJohn · 22/11/2013 09:10

Have you got a combi boiler, or have you got a hot water cylinder? If so is it white?

MoonlightandRoses · 22/11/2013 21:06

Piglet - Apparently it's a common or garden hot water cylinder (some variety of insulated twin coil 250l tank, or so I am reliably informed Smile )

wonky - I now have moved on from DI's lovely tap to this one, but DH claims to dislike it Sad

if you have an ordinary hot water cylinder, then the hot water pressure will be much lower than the cold water pressure, which in the kitchen comes straight off the water main.

thay means:
flashy fashionable Italian taps, which are designed for high pressure, will give a poor flow of hot water.

Some mixer taps, especially imported ones with ceramic discs, and especially those with a joystick or single rotating/tilting handle, will be prone to leaking cold water up the hot pipes, which causes various undesirable problems. If you are in a tap shop, have a look under the tap and see if it has tiny connectors the size of pencils (which will give you poor flow) or connectors the size of your finger.

British taps, such as Bristan, will give you better service. Have a look at Plumbworld.

PigletJohn · 22/11/2013 21:45

p.s.

if it is a "twin coil 250l" cylinder are you sure it is not white? What colour is it?

PigletJohn · 22/11/2013 21:46

(this is not a joke)

MoonlightandRoses · 22/11/2013 21:51

Ah, that makes sense and will check before purchasing. Water container very definitely cylindrical and very definitely greeny-bluey in colour (sort of duck-egg shade).

OP posts:
PigletJohn · 22/11/2013 21:56

blue is low pressure.

DIddled · 22/11/2013 22:15

God you are good Piglet John- so will my Reginox Thames be ok do you think please?

PigletJohn · 22/11/2013 22:25

you'll have to answer all those questions.

Monty27 · 22/11/2013 22:28

Less is more imho. I bought a fancy one and dc's used to slam the controller. I now have an ugly ordinary bog standard mixer tap, that is functional.

wonkylegs · 22/11/2013 22:28

Abode do also sell a range of mixer taps specifically for low pressure systems, so if you need it they do have them. They are a british company set up for the British market.

MoonlightandRoses · 22/11/2013 22:29

And have now decided to purchase this here one as a compromise between modern/referential (me) and traditional (him).

Thank you all for design and practical input!

I especially like taps with this kind of capstan head which is easy to operate even with wet soapy hands, and simple to maintain.

I understand there are some people who don't like it.

DIddled · 22/11/2013 22:44

I have got a brand new Vaillant Eco boiler 37- house is warm as toast and water coming out of taps is lovely and warm. What will that mean PJ please x

PigletJohn · 22/11/2013 22:55

is it a 637 with a cylinder? or an 837 combi? Or what?

DIddled · 22/11/2013 22:56

837 combi. Thanks

PigletJohn · 22/11/2013 22:59

then you can have pretty well any tap. It is quite a powerful combi so can accomodate a greater water flow than most, if you are lucky enough to have a good incoming water supply pipe.

PigletJohn · 22/11/2013 23:02

here you are

DIddled · 22/11/2013 23:28

Thanks! We are still missing quite a few radiators due to the work still being ongoing, but the ones that are on are lovely and warm and our water seems much hotter. Wish I had swapped it over years ago!

Fab advice as always PJ.
