Don't people just choose what they like? Not necessarily following high fashion, but you pick from what the shops are selling at the time.

We're in the process of kitchen and bathroom rebuild/refits. I had to step away from the thread you mention! But I don't care either about fashion or what other people think of my taste, fortunately!

Mandy21 · 21/11/2013 18:45

Plain white suite. Tiles I liked because whether its in fashion / trendy or not, its your house, something you use every day and have to like. Even if our 1980s peach suite was splashed across next month's edition of Ideal Home not a cat in hells chance I cant wait to get rid of it as I absolutely hate it.

PoppyInTheFog · 21/11/2013 19:40

In the 1970's bathroom suites became available in a variety of colours, one colour was avocado green. In the 1980's white suites became available again.

AfricanExport · 21/11/2013 19:44

I would go plain white painted walls. wooden floors and white or stone rules on kitchen / bathrooms.

That's what I would do regardless. .. I'm boring that way.

AfricanExport · 21/11/2013 19:45
  • tiles.
Wishfulmakeupping · 21/11/2013 19:47

Plain white suite although we have put in waterfall taps and they will date very quickly I loved them too much to choose anything else

lalalonglegs · 21/11/2013 19:52

I would avoid: lairy wallpaper on feature walls, travertine tiles, granite worktops, bi-fold doors, oak anything. I like some of those things but I think they are already looking dated.

AChickenCalledKorma · 21/11/2013 19:55

Have just finished doing up our house. Basically, plain colours, white woodwork, white suite, neutral floors. Nothing too twiddly, patterned or featured in any lifestyle magazines. Kept the 1930s fireplace because it goes with the house, so is dated in a good way. Light oak shaker-style kitchen, because it may be boring, but it's always in the kitchen ranges, unlike some of the really cool stuff that we decided against Grin.

But have added a few interesting light fittings and soft furnishings that can easily be replaced.

notablob · 21/11/2013 19:55

So, if not bifold doors - are we back to French windows?

OP posts:
deepfriedsage · 21/11/2013 19:59

Double doors with floor to ceiling windows either side, preferably with a window opening at the top.

lalalonglegs · 21/11/2013 20:01

Really huge, slideaway patio doors (more expensive than bi-fold) or nice french windows. Bi-fold are great but they have become a cliche.

I think there will be a move away from that whole Scandi, ultra-neutral look which again, I like, but has become ubiquitous. I think people will start using colour more cleverly and upcycling older pieces of furniture more so they don't look as if they've done a sweep of Ikea.

MummytoMog · 21/11/2013 20:10

Don't. Care.

I love bifold doors and Ikea. House will have both when it is finished :) will look totes amaze. I will post pictures to prove it.

lalalonglegs · 21/11/2013 20:19

Spooky. Someone has started another thread today on exactly the same subject Tardis What will be the avocado bathroom of the future/

goingtobefree · 21/11/2013 21:32

Lalalonglengs
Are these sliding patio doors similar to barn doors?
I was suggested this for the door between the lounge and coservatory

lalalonglegs · 21/11/2013 22:22

Not really sure what you mean - I've only seen hinged barn doors (not s country girl Blush). These sort showvwhat I had in mind.

patchworkchick · 21/11/2013 22:31

white bathrooms furniture, tiles can be changed, wall painted - never tile the whole bathroom. Think pivot doors will date, bi-fold doors - they are brilliant. When renovating never think of fashion, always fit what you love and works best with your home and now avocado is very retro - so who cares as long as its home.

sleepyhead · 21/11/2013 22:36

Everything dates. You can't avoid it.

I'm looking right now at the doors in my flat which have all had plywood nailed over them at some point in the past because paneled doors were soooo dated.

People tend to hate the recent past the most. Leave anything long enough and it becomes retro and then classic.

Do what you love.

Personally I hate the trend for putting multiple en suites in relatively small properties. I'd far rather have the space for storage which is horribly lacking in a lot of modern design.

msmoss · 21/11/2013 23:06

It depends I suppose on why you don't want it to become dated, is it a house you think you'll move on from or a house you're going to stay in for a while.

If you're looking to move on, then the best thing to do is probably go classic, inoffensive and in-keeping with the style of the property, so even if something isn't to someone's exact taste then they are likely to think that they could live with it until they could afford to change it.

If you're planning on staying for a while then just do what you like, you're the ones that will need to enjoy the space.
