Tiling, how difficult is it?

I need to tile around the bath and over the sink. I have never tiled before, how hard is it to do and get them looking ok?

I recently tiled for the first time. The tiling and grouting weren't hard but the cutting is.
I ended up using squares of mosaic tiles. They were on a net backing so only needed cut with scissors so no tile cutter and lots of swearing at broken tiles.

spiderbabymum · 19/11/2013 15:41

Really not that hard . I would DEFINATELY give it a go .

spiderbabymum · 19/11/2013 15:41

Agree ....plan it so you don't have to cut the tiles

spiderbabymum · 19/11/2013 15:42

Then no hiring of a tile cutter gadget needed

AnotherWorld · 19/11/2013 15:43

I'd say it looks easy and probably isn't hard to do. But doing it well is an art and best left to the professionals if you are picky about how it looks

I would measure the length you need to cover and then choose a tile to fit . Wall measures 2 metres ....go for tiles that are ten cm square ...or slightly smaller to allow for spacing s .
Use tile spacers and a plastic do da to spread the adhesive on evenly

spiderbabymum · 19/11/2013 15:45

Why don't you try you tube . Someone will show you

spiderbabymum · 19/11/2013 15:52

I've helped out with tiling ...it's a doddle as look as you don't have to go around corners or cut tiles ...it's all in the planning . AND I reckon getting the right do da with ridges on is the key

spiderbabymum · 19/11/2013 15:52

You could always pick up cheap discounted tiles and have a bash of tiling a wooden board .........see how you go

spiderbabymum · 19/11/2013 15:53

I have hunners to do ...

EeyoreIsh · 19/11/2013 15:53

speaking from recent experience, make sure the wall is very flat (horizontally and vertically) or use v v v small tiles.

HelpfulChap · 19/11/2013 15:54

I am by no means an expert but have done a reasonable job of tiling in the past. As others have said the cutting is the bit that needs the skill. I eventually bought a proper electric tile cutter & it really does make the job so much easier. Otherwise, the post regarding mosaic tiles is a good one & will save a lot of grief.

Tiling is not that awful but if you are tiling around a bath you might want to consider using a waterproof backing board. We didn't, due to time and money constraints. Water seeped behind the tiles, now they've all fallen off, badly damaging the wall in the process. You should also use backing board if it's a single layer wall and there is a possibility of water coming in from the outside (as well as damp proofing the outside of the wall). Getting water stuck behind tiles is not good.

Now, if anyone has ever fit PVC bathroom cladding and would like to come and help me next weekend, I'd appreciate it, as our bathroom wall is now in that much of state that there's pretty much nothing else we can do no, unless we want to totally gut the bathroom and be without a shower for a fortnight Sad

Thanks all. We have moved into a house that hadn't been touched since the fifties. When we get our extension done next year the bathroom will move, but have put in a very cheap bath to do us in the meantime and I need to tile it so that the DC can splash in the bath.

I just want something clean, white and not too wonky, that will last about a year.

PVC cladding is easier to fit and probably cheaper here

D0oinMeCleanin · 19/11/2013 16:24

It's what we are using until we have the time (i.e we go on holiday) to be without a bathroom for a fortnight to have the wall properly repaired. The bonus being if I do decide I like it, it will just come off and go back on after the walls been fixed.

that is not mission impossible op. my dh has just tiled our bathroom, learnt from a you tube vid, and it looks fab!
