Wardrobe in alcove

I've just bought myself a lovely new wardrobe to go in an alcove in my bedroom. I spent the weekend putting it together. There is a 6 inch gap between the wardrobe and the walls/ceiling. I'm thinking of trying to somehow build out the walls so that the wardrobe looks built in. Has anyone done this? If so what did you do? Can I just get some lengths of baton to make a frame and the attach some wood to the front. Is it something that I can do or do I need a builder/handyman?

I think it would look smarter with something on top...
I can't visualise what the sides would look like. You could 'dress it'. If it were bigger I'd say a box or old luggage. What about a plaid rug or throw, folded to fit the space? Alternatively ivy, hops fairy lights?

There isn't room to put something physical on top. Its a Pax wardrobe and I have seen pictures where people make it look as though they're built in. I want to try and achieve this look.

What about the sides though?
You could do it by batoning above the wardrobe into the alcove and attaching a panel that's exactly the right size to the batons.

There are some ideas here
It's the sort of thing a joiner would take days over and would be £££. You could get a good effect with coving or beveled edging attached to the batons on either side.
Well done on building the wardrobes btw, I find IKEA stuff frustrating but satisfying.
