wallpaper in the bathroom

We're looking to redecorate our bathroom. It hasn't been done for over 20 years Blush . We currently have wallpaper and its lasted amazingly well. We put a shower and extractor 3 years ago but even so it does get a bit steamy and there is condensation the paper and a little mould in places recently.

Am I crazy to consider/want wallpaper when we redecorate? I've been googling and some sites say steer clear and others say no problems. Some say.if anti mould with wallpaper paste and others say use vinyl paper. We have a very Victorian bathroom and would love some William Morris paper in there. Please tell me it'll work!

you might consider uprating the effectiveness of your extractor. Most basic bathroom fans are very weedy little things and need to run for a long time to reduce the water vapour.

We only got it installed 3 years ago and I made a big deal to the bathroom company about needing a very strong one/2 separate ones if needed as DH has steamy shower Angry Confused . Is it easy to upgrade? I think ours is in the loft as goes into the ceiling and up into the loft. Don't want the loft getting too damp Wink

Hows about wallpaper piglet - what's your opinion of its suitability in the bathroom?

if it goes into the loft (I hope you mean it has a duct to take the steam outside through a wall or the eaves) then you can get very powerful, and quiet, ducted fans, some of them two-speed. They are fitted in the loft and for increased quietness can be mounted on a board padded with carpet or something to deaden vibration.

I would only use a vinyl wallcovering in a bathroom, not paper. If the paste gets damp it will peel off. The Walthamstow designs might be out of copyright by now, so maybe you can get them on vinyl, unless you disapprove of it.

Do you know what, I think our vent just goes into the loft and that's it. I'll have to check with DH. I remember at the time being Shock Hmm about it and DH shrugging and saying it all just dissipates into the loft and should be fine.

That's terrible.

Go up there on a cold night and see the water dripping off the rotton timbers.

I'll check with DH when he comes home and hope I'm wrong but I don't think I am .

We have lining paper in a bathroom which is generally prone to mould, and it's the only bit that doesn't really go mouldy.

But it is painted with special bathroom paint and there's a layer of 2mm polystyrene thermal "wallpaper" underneath. So while the tiles and grout are sometimes running with condensation, the slightly warmer and more absorbent painted paper has survived a good few years.

But ick! at your bathroom venting straight to the loft! Agree with PigletJohn, bad bad bad.
